12 COMMENTSHarry's POV
"What day is it now?" I sat at the garage with Ben watching Jane transition from her shift at the kitchen to the guarding duties she took on again without asking me.
"Day four," Ben squirmed in the lawn chair next to mine.
It was going on day four of Jane's strange workaholic behaviors. No one has seen her go back to her house and I wasn't sure how she was getting by without any sleep. I knew when I didn't sleep for more than two days, it was like I was drugged out of my mind.
But even as I went through the cafeteria line the last few days, she didn't seem unstable or sick. She just seemed like she was worried. Her brows stayed pulled in and her eyes were constantly moving and searching.
"Do you know why she's doing this?" Ben asked me and I shook my head unsure of her reasonings.
"Don't worry about her, alright?" I sighed and looked back into town to see everyone walking back to their house's. "Go home, it's late. I'll see ya tomorrow..."
Ben grunted not wanting to leave, but the kid knew how to follow rules well and did so.
"G'night Jane!" He screamed and she turned on her heel all the way up there to give him a wave.
As Ben ran off back towards his house, I watched Jane turn to face forward, but our eyes met momentarily as she realized I was watching her. She waved at me too, but before I could respond she faced forward again.
I sighed and thought about removing her from lookout, but knew she would pitch a fit. So I grabbed a gun from the gun locker and went to accompany her. The space on the scaffolding seemed smaller than I last remembered, but maybe it was just because of Jane standing still. I was used to her pacing back and forth.
We were quiet for awhile. But, I could tell she knew why I was up there, but I didn't know how to confront her about it. How would she react to me confronting her about it?
"You're not sleeping again," I stated in a low voice not making eye contact with her.
She sighed and readjusted the strap of her gun on her shoulder. "So?"
"That's dangerous," I pursed my mouth shut and crossed my arms over my chest.
"You don't sleep, either," she spat while side-eyeing me.
"But I'm not going four days without any rest. I relax here and there. I have to or I get out of control."
"Do you think I'm out of control?" She swallowed and I shook my head.
"No, I just don't want you to hurt yourself," I took a steadying breath. That was one thing Jane knew how to do well, get under my skin. She'd mastered it since the moment I met her.
"I'm fine," she pursed her magenta lips shut and creased her brows while staring at the tree line ahead which told me she wasn't fine.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked plainly trying not to push her too far away from me.
"There's nothing to talk about," she flickered her eyelashes and shrugged her shoulders flustered with all of my questions.
"Can I talk to you about how I'm doing?" I countered realizing I wasn't getting anywhere with asking her questions about herself.
