Jane's POV

I was standing by Harry's desk holding the cake in my arms smiling ear to ear with everyone singing together, "Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear JAAAaaane! Happy Birthday to -!"

A loud shot went off followed by four more outside in the front lawn of the town hall. The cake fell from my hands to the floor and the room bursted into chaos. I stared up at Harry and we both ran to the drawers of his desk, each grabbing a gun and knife.

We ran outside onto the lawn and I watched Juan Pablo jump on top of a Mad Man running right under the scaffolding. His knife plunged into the man easily and I assumed the man was dead as Juan Pablo ran to kill another one.

The rest of the town was watching and waiting wondering what was happening. Loud shouts, screams, and cries were echoing in my ear drums and I looked in the chaos to find Harry. What was I supposed to do to help?

He was running toward Kelsey by the garage. She was fighting off a Mad Man ripping her clothes off and I watched Harry pull his gun up, shoot the man in the head, and scoop Kelsey up into his arms. My chest hurt watching the two of them interact, but I knew it was selfish of me to be so upset. Kelsey was screaming and crying as Harry rushed her into the garage away from my view.

"Ben!" A scream woke me from my pity party and I turned to see Ciara running after Ben with a lamp in her hand. She swung it toward a greasy Mad Man grabbing Ben's arm, but the Mad Man pulled a gun out and pointed it straight toward Ciara's chest.

No, no, no! He was not taking Ben and killing Ciara on my fucking birthday.

I pulled my gun up as I ran to them and found a perfect shot to take him out. My gun went off and the Mad Man flew back onto the dirt with Ben. Ciara bent down, grabbed the gun out of his hand, and shot him in the head for me. I let out a deep breath I hadn't realized I was holding and watched her check over Ben before running with him to shelter and safety.

I looked around to see a few dead one's roaming around from the open gate and I immediately ran to shut it, however it wasn't actually open. The dead ones walking about were all my neighbors killed by the Mad Men.

My jaw went slack and I felt my stomach curl with what I knew I needed to do. I ran to each one and slid my knife into their temple. And one by one they dropped to the ground and I internally began to loathe everything about today and my birthday. As I finished with the last one, I fell to my knees and started violently crying.

Loud gun shots were still going off and I was waiting for it to be aimed at me so I could kill whoever killed my neighbors, but the more I cried the more I realized I wanted the shots to be aimed at me so I wouldn't have to kill anyone else.

"Jane!" my name was called in the distance by my brother's southern accent. I looked up from the dirt I was staring at to see Will running toward me. "Get up! Get up!"

He pulled at my shirt and I stood to my feet to fight with him. A Mad Man swinging a sword was nearby and I noticed he was flanking two other Mad Men with massive knives and guns strapped to their torsos.

I pulled my gun up and aimed to shoot one, shot him, and aimed for the next one. But they were too close, I was going to have to run and fight at the same time.

Will followed me as I ran to the garage ducking several times as loud shots panged into the metal building in front of us. I shut the door behind us, locked it, and shoved a desk in front of it.
