Most people would be susceptible to the charms of Mantle the Magnificent, however I like to think that I was one of the few who were resistant to his charisma.
As soon as the slow dance song ended, I made up some pathetic excuse about needing to go to the bathroom. I didn't look back as I run towards the bathroom, but I did get stopped by Veronica.
"Woah, where the hell do you think you're going?" she demanded.
"Um, the bathroom," I blurted out.
"Why aren't you dancing the next song with Reggie?"
"I can't do it," I sighed. "He's too much. Too close. Too hot. I couldn't breathe."
"You're going to need some coaching from Queen Veronica, girl," she assured me. She put her arm around my shoulder and led me to the punch bowl. She poured me a generous amount and slipped in some liquor from a small, silver flask she took out from her chest.
"Okay, first of all, you're going to get in trouble if you get caught. Second, how did that even fit in there?" I asked bewildered.
"Just a little Lodge trick," she shrugged and winked at me. "I knew either you or Betty would need some. Looks like you're the first, my friend. Take a sip."
I didn't need to be told twice. I downed the entire thing in one clean gulp.
"Easy, girl," Veronica chuckled.
I snatched the flask from Veronica, and was about to chug the entire thing, until a teary-eyed Betty made her way towards us.
"Oh my god," I said.
She didn't need to say anything. I knew that Archie broke her heart.
"Is- is everything alright?" Veronica questioned.
I shook my head and we both lead her to the bathroom. Betty could barely carry herself, and basically let us drag her body.
As soon as we entered the bathroom, I yelled at the girls who were already occupying to get out. They all scurried away; some with some half-applied lipstick.
"Spill," Veronica told her.
Betty sobbed and told us how Archie didn't reciprocate her feelings. Betty, Kevin and I were so sure that Archie liked her back. Apparently the world had other plans for him.
"He's totally missing out on what a bombshell you've become," I told her fiercely. "He's just another dumb jock who doesn't see what's right in front of him!"
"Who are you referring to here?" Veronica mused.
"Archie, of course!" I retorted.
"I'm fine, guys," Betty sighed. "Let's just go out and have a good time,"
Veronica and I exchanged confused glances as Betty too it upon herself to lead us out of the bathroom. Upon our exit, we were greeted by Ginger, one of Cheryl's minions.
"Hello, girls," she plastered a sickly sweet smile. "The three of you are invited to Thornhill to attend Cheryl's after-party tonight,"
Cheryl Blossom wasn't known to be charitable, for everything she did was only done and executed if she had something to gain from it. So, when Betty and I also received an invitation to go to her after-party following the dance, we knew there was an ulterior motive.
"Bets, what on earth are we doing at the Blossom house?" I asked.
"Who knows, but it's making me super uncomfortable..." she trailed. "I mean, Polly spent a lot of time here with Jason before..."
