Step one is easy. Every single person has that one person in their life who will continue to haunt them for as long as possible, and it wasn't hard for me to identify him.
Reggie Mantle has been in my life for over fifteen years and it was driving me insane.
"No way, Kev," Betty scoffed. "Mia literally told me over the phone last night, that she was over him. The summer did her some good. Three months away from that monkey!"
I gave them a sheepish smile, and Betty sent me a look of betrayal.
"Oh, no," she snapped. "There is no way I'm letting you pine over an egotistical asshole like Reggie Mantle!"
She pushed back her lunch tray in disgust and claimed that her appetite was lost. Kevin had nothing better to do except laugh.
"I can't help it, okay?" I explained. "Look, I hadn't seen him since school ended before summer, so I thought I was over it. But every time I see him- I can't breathe, and it hurts because I can't do anything about it. At least you and Archie are actually really close friends."
"Don't talk about Archie." Betty snapped.
"Right. Sorry," I spoke. There was a short awkward pause before Kevin opened his rambunctious mouth.
"So what are you gonna do, Mia?" He asked.
"Well, the best I can do now is try to avoid him. Like, wherever, whenever, however; I don't care, as long as I don't have to encounter him. Otherwise I just might die, because whenever I see him, it physically hurts."
"Wow, you are so whipped!" Kevin cackled.
"Can I join?" A voice chirped from behind.
The three of us looked to see a bright-eyed Veronica Lodge eagerly waiting by our table with a lunch tray grasped in her delicate hands. Luckily Betty had already filled me in on everything to do with the girl from New York, so I didn't need to ask any questions.
We all nodded our heads, and she took a seat right next to Kevin and across from me.
"So, who's whipped?" she buzzed, looking upon us for answers.
"Uh, Mia is. Have you guys met before?" Kevin responded, gesturing between the two of us.
"Oh, Mia! I don't believe we've met yet," she beamed at me and stuck her perfectly manicured hand out. "I'm Veronica Lodge."
I returned her handshake and introduced myself, "Amelia May. But you can just call me Mia,"
"So, spill the tea? Who are you in love with?" She buzzed. You could tell she was the type of girl who thrived on gossip and scandalous stories.
Sensing that I was too shy to reveal my long-time crush, Kevin blurted it out for me.
"Mia is in love with Reggie,"
"Who's Reggie?" She asked, rather puzzled.
Kevin stretched out his arm and pointed towards the football field where a bunch of guys in football gear were practicing and warming up.
"You see that freakishly tall one over there? Okay, he just took out his water bottle- oh, Mia, enjoy this, he's pouring water all over his face!"
"Kevin!" Betty scolded him.
"Oh, the one with the black hair?" Veronica mused. "Wow, I guess you're both into jocks, huh. So, he's your boyfriend, and you want to confess the L-word?"
Kevin, and surprisingly Betty, both burst into laughter. Veronica looked utterly confused at their responses, and arched her thick eyebrows.
"I don't get it," she stated.
