PROLOGUE
Oh, God, no!
No this again.
It was that time of the year.
The time of year every single young person dreaded.
Well everyone who hadn't lost their mind yet, anyway.
The time of year everyone, well almost, had to suffer through.
The first day of school.
God, you're the only one who can save me now, don't let me down, buddy.
Please.
Pretty please!
Those where the thoughts running through my mind as I stood frozen on my front porch. I'm not kidding, I was frozen.
The world could have come to an end right then and there and I wouldn't have bugged, not even an inch. Anything would be better than stepping out of my safe zone and heading over to my extremely un-safe zone.
But unfortunately, I didn't have a say in what I wanted to do in my life. Not in this case anyway.
"Sam, get that ass out of here and on it's way to school!" I lovely brother shouted at me from behind.
"I don't wanna!" I shouted back.
"Sam, leave! Now!" he shouted.
"I really don't want to George," I whined.
"Well, too bad! Now out with you before I kick you out myself!"
Grumbling, I stepped out and shut the door behind me. A few steps later, I stopped again. A vision of how this year would be popped into my head and I felt a shiver go down my back.
Overload of work.
Overload of homework.
Overload of stress.
The guilt of reading while you should be studying.
Your computer calling out for you.
Your textbooks haunting your dreams.
The disapproving looks you got after every grade you got.
I wasn't ready for all that to start all over again. It felt like it just ended and now I'm being forced to go through it all over again. Summer holidays were too short. they should last six months.
And that's the minimum, of course.
Hey, you're going to see your best friends again. You haven't seen them all summer, I reminded myself.
In this case, the good didn't overpower the bad, no even a little. But there was some good in the situation. With the thought of my best friends in mind, my feet started to move towards hell-on-earth.
When I got there I stood in front of the massive building, frozen yet another time.
Oh COME ON! Why do I kept on freezing? It was so hot out!
I undoubtedly looked like an idiot back then, but I couldn't find a single fuck to give. My right hand was holding my backpack strap with a death grip, the other hanging by my side. My mouth wide open, and my brown eyes staring up at the giant monster up ahead of me, waiting to swallow the person I was right then and spitting back the version it, and other, higher authorities, wanted me to be.
And I was right here, in front of its mouth, waiting to be swallowed, chewed, and mashed into a whole new person.
And it wasn't even my own choice.
