[ Chapter T W O ]
Now, you might be wondering why I despise Dexter so much. What might he have done for me feel this way about him? Did we like, go out, or something? Do we have a history together?
(Pun totally intended, by the way.)
Well, let me tell you that... yes.
Nah, I'm just messing with you. No, we did not date.
He was my old neighbour's cousin back when I was eight.
My neighbour, Natasha, used to be one of my closest friends back then. Actually, no, she was my only friend. Which is probably why my mum had invited her over for my eighth birthday. But it happened to be during the Easter holidays and her cousin, Dexter, had come to visit. So naturally, the good-hearted woman my mum was, she said that he could tag along. That got me all excited, thinking that I'd make a new friend. But boy, was I wrong.
After the cake was cut and the gifts handed to me. The parents left the living room to 'let the kids have fun'. Great idea, I know.
And soon after we started playing.
But during the time Nat went to the toilet, leaving Dexter and me alone. I still have no idea how it happened, but Dexter managed to knock down one of my mum's expensive vases; those big dark ones with carvings in gold. Yeah, my mum loves those. It was a big one that she had placed on a stool. It fell down with a big bang and got smashed into a thousand pieces right in front of our eyes. And during that, again, I have no idea how but I tripped and fell. A shard of the broken object scraped my wrist, breaking the bracelet Nat had given me in the process.
Tough luck.
I looked up at Dexter and he had a terrified look on his face, "My mummy's going to kill me." He said to me.
"Don't worry. I'll take the blame. My mum's not going to say anything to me since it's my birthday and because I got hurt."
He nodded and looked relieved.
Right on cue, The grown-ups came rushing into the room asking if we were alright, what the hell happened and what did we break this time. I could see Dexter's mum giving him an it-better -not-have-been-you-or-else-you're -a-deadman look.
I gulped looking up at my parents who stood in front of me, concern evident on their faces as they eyed my bleeding wrist. "Mummy, Daddy, it was all my fault. I ran into the vase, tipping it over." I acted, "It was all my fault mummy you have to believe it."
By the end of my little act, I actually started crying because that cut was actually deep and it hurt. And because I was fucking eight.
I put my wrist forward, "And Daddy I hurt myself." By that time, big fat tears had started pouring out of my eyes.
"Oh, my poor princess!" My dad said kneeling down and wrapping his arms around me. My mum came running in with a first aid kit in hand. She took my wrist in her's and started to clean it up.
"Oh, you even broke the bracelet Nat gave you!
"Yeah, but it's not that important, mum the cut hurts a lot. And I'm so sorry for the vase." I covered for Dexter
"Sweetie it's okay,"
When my mum had finished cleaning up my wound, she asked the kids to leave the room so that she could pick up the glass pieces. At that moment, I looked up and saw Natasha standing in the doorway, her arms crossed in front of her and an angry expression on her face. I looked at her confused.
"Um... hey, Nat,"
"Not important'! You said that breaking the bracelet I got you was not important!" She hissed at me.
"Wait no, I was just trying to convi-"
"I can't believe that you were so careless to actually break the bracelet I got you!" She accused.
"Wait? What? No, I didn't break it!" I defended myself. "I wasn't even the one who ran into the vase! It was Dexter!"
Right at that moment, Dexter appeared.
"Is she telling the truth, Dex?" She asks him.
"Yea, Dexter please tell her," I begged him, tears threatening to spill over.
He looked at me, a smirk on his face then his face turns serious again as he turns his face towards his cousin.
"What the hell are you talking about, Samantha?"
I could feel tears that were forming spilling over my cheeks. Nat had always been one to overreact and I knew that she was making a big deal out of this too.
"I can't believe that you broke the bracelet I got you and then tried blaming it on my cousin! " That said, she turned around, slipped her hand into her dad's and walked out of my house.
And that asshole just stood there. I was full on crying by then not because I was expecting him to apologise. But because he had just taken my best-and only-friend away from me.
And sure enough, she never talked to me again after that. Even when, one year later, she had to move away, she didn't even bother to come and say goodbye.
He was the cause of me having to eat alone for years before I was once again able to make new friends.
He was the reason I lost a good friend.
And he didn't even care enough to remember me or to apologize.
And
Only a few years ago, in freshman year, he moved here. Everybody was automatically interested in him. No one knew where he came from or who he was.
He was a mystery. Only I knew how big of an asshole he really was.
I know that you're probably thinking that I've been holding a grudge for too long but try being a loner growing up. And it's all because of one person who came in your life for five minutes, only to ruin it. Call me immature, childish or just plain old stupid. But yea, I don't like Dexter Everett. So deal with it.
And I don't think that he likes me very much either
