Levi POV

As I was walking home, I remembered my friend, Melanie's advice about my problem with Jack at school. The concrete below my feet was what I felt like, dull and lifeless. My parents could either be completely supportive or they could think I'm an utter disgrace. I looked up and saw I was nearing my house. My heart started racing and I got super nervous. Levi, calm down, you're just gonna talk to your parents about liking the same gender, I thought. Luckily, my baby brother and sister were at our grandmother's house, so if this goes downhill, they wouldn't have to listen to the likely curses that would fly out my parents mouths. I sighed and kicked up my walking pace, trying to get home faster.
Once inside, I throw my black shoes down on the floor and ran up the stairs to my room. My room was a mess, clothes strewn about and the comforter hanging off the side of my bed. I slung my backpack against the wall and took out my phone. Speedily, I entered my password and went to the Contacts app. In the app, I scrolled down and found Mel's name. I pressed call and it rang until I heard her soothing voice.
She spoke first, startling me, "Hey Levi, what's up? Are you gonna tell them soon?"
I sighed and said, "Yep, I'm really nervous but I feel like I can do it. Thanks to your encouraging words, of course."
"Aww thanks Levi. Did you say you were gonna tell them after or during supper?" Mel asked.
I replied, "I was gonna ask after, but I feel I might do it during supper, that way I can take pauses to eat and make it not seem that I'm nervous."
Mel said, "Yeah, that's a pretty smart plan. Remember, go ahead and get multiple bags packed incase my mom and I have to come get you because you were kicked out." I knew she was right, it just seemed unreal. Your own parents kicking you out because you don't like girls, goodness, society is messed up, I thought.
"I'll go do that right now. Anyways, I'll call you afterwards. And remember, I'll be waiting at the park near my house. If I even get kicked out. Well, I'll talk to you later, okay."
"Okay, stay strong, please."
"I promise." I pressed the end call button as soon as those final words flowed out of my mouth. Setting my phone down on my dresser, I went to my closet and grabbed my backpack. It was the best thing I could get that wouldn't look like I was moving completely. I grabbed a P!ATD shirt and some black torn jeans. Then, I stuffed a few more nesscesities in the bag, including 2 sweatshirts because I knew Mel was going to steal one.
Once packed and ready, I walked slowly down the stairs towards the kitchen. I yelled, "Mom? What are we having for dinner?" I waited for a response.
My mom yelled in reply, "Chicken Alfredo." I jumped up and down and clapped my hands excitedly, I absolutely loved Chicken Alfredo. Well, the smell was torturing, so I went back up to my room and sat on my bed. I started running through what I was going to say to my parents. My hands were shaking and sweaty, but that's normal if you're anxious or nervous.
My head snapped up when I heard my mother call my dad and I's names. She yelled, "Levi! Daniel! Food's ready!" I ran down the stairs almost running into my dad. I apologized for almost mowing him over, but continued rushing to the dining room. The food smelled amazing.
We all were seated and eating when I decided, it is time. I glanced up at them and took a deep breath before I cleared my throat to speak.
They looked up and I started talking because I had no choice. I began, "Um, mom and dad? At school, I have this friend I met in class last week. His name is Jack and we have so many things in common, it's amazing. So, at lunch we were talking and Mel walked over to our table and talked to us.......until I decided I needed to talk to her alone. We went to the courtyard and talked, she was very supportive and I hope you will be to," I paused, realizing I was about to drop the bomb. I braced myself because I knew they were going to start yelling at me. My breath became hitched and I tried to hide it, "Mother. Father. I am not attracted to girls at all. I'm more attracted to Jack than Mel. Jack is so cute, I don't like him as a friend anymore. And before you say anything, you know I love you and would never disobey you, but I just don't feel attracted to girls like I was in middle school. I'm sorry, you probably hate me now."
All of a sudden, I feel my father reach across the table and slap my face, it burned and I felt tears pushing at the corners of my eyes. Then, the yelling started. First with my dad, "You utter disgrace of a child! I didn't go through 16 years of raising you, just to find out you don't even like girls! You like boys and that's not acceptable in this house! I will not have a gay son living in this household, who might influence their little siblings! I can't believe it! You will not be allowed to step foot in this house ever again!" I was full out crying by now. I could tell my father was livid and so was my mom. My mother didn't say anything for some reason, but she sure didn't need to add on to what my dad had just harshly yelled at me. I threw my food away and put my dish in the kitchen sink. I ran all the way up the stairs, still crying a river. My room seemed like a safe haven for me right now. I shakily grabbed my phone and pressed call on Mel's number.
She answered immediately, she knew something was up.
"Levi! Are you okay? You don't sound okay?" Mel's voice seemed as panicked as mine.
I replied, "No, actually I'm not that okay. When I came out to them and told them about Jack......." I paused, remembering what just happened, "My dad reached across the table and slapped me. Then he yelled at me saying I was a utter disgrace and how I could be a influence to my younger siblings. He also told me to never step foot in this house again. So, I'm gonna gather my stuff then head down to the park."
Mel sounded like she was crying too, but she replied anyways, "Oh, goodness Levi, that's terrible, I'll go tell my mom to drive me down to the park. See ya soon, sweetheart. Try to get away ASAP, I don't want them hurting you anymore than they already are." And with that, the call ceased. I remembered to grab a few more items before I angrily threw the backpack on my back and stormed out the house. I slammed the front door behind me, I didn't care, I didn't live here anymore. I took in a deep breath and began to sprint down to the park.
I reached the park bench and sat down, feeling relief drench my body. My legs and chest were aching from running, but I had gotten away quickly. When I heard Mel's truck drive up, I was too weak to even jump up to go hug her. Instead, she ran to me.
"Oh no! Levi are you okay? Did you run here?"
I gasped for breath and replied, "Yes, I ran here and I'm perfectly fine. Just winded, that's all." She smiled, making me feel instantly better inside. She offered a hand and I gladly stood up, followed her to her truck and got in the back seat with her. Her mom asked if I was fine, I told her I was.
Mel spoke, "Well, welcome to the family, technically."
I laughed and said, "Thanks.....sis." She reached over and punched me playfully on the arm. I shouted a little too loud, "Hey! I've been abused enough by my dad!" Mel stopped and hugged me instead. I leaned my head on hers and we stayed like that for the rest of the ride to "home".
~Time skip to Mel's house~
Mel said that their guest bedroom was right beside hers, so if I needed anything, she was right there. I followed her up the stairs and to the door to the room. She opened it for me and I stepped inside, saying, "Wow thanks! This room is nice!"
Mel shrugged her shoulders and said, "Nah, it's not much, but you're welcome anyways bro." When she called me "bro" I wanted to throw her to the ground and tickle her mercilessly. But I wasn't going to, I knew better. I rolled my eyes instead and stepped inside the room. I placed my backpack down on the bed and started unpacking my clothes. Mel offered to help, but I denied, she was just going to steal one of my sweatshirts when I wasn't looking. She left me to my thoughts and I was glad. I needed to text Jack and slowly bring up the subject of us dating, maybe. Levi, he probably doesn't even like you, stop getting your hopes up, the voice in my head told me, I hated it so much, but it was there for a reason.
Mel knocked on my door and I yelled, "Yes Mel?"
"Levi, do you wanna go to our rec room and talk about what happened and maybe try to get something heated up between you and Jack?" She asked after she had opened the door to my room. I sighed and knew she was gonna drag me down there, regardless of how much I protested.
"Might as well. Just stay in here and talk while I get a few more things put away."
Mel walked over and plopped down on my bed, "Nah, I'll just sit here and be quiet until your done." I shook my head, she could be really difficult at times.
I announced, "I'm done, finally!" She jumped up and down, obviously excited. Then, she did something odd, Mel asked me if I could give her a piggyback ride. She acted mature, until you got to know her. I huffed and rolled my eyes, once again and said, "Sure, why not." Mel shrieked in excitement. I told her to get on my back, she did so happily.
Once Mel was comfortable on my back, I carried her down the stairs to the rec room. I grunted and said, "Good lord Mel, when did you become so heavy?" She lightly slapped me on the back of my head, but I continued to carry her.
The rec room was large and well-lit. I half threw her down and half set her down gently. Before I could escape fast enough, she kicked me in my butt. I yelped in pain and she laughed like a maniac.
After a few minutes of kicking each other and punching each other, we sat down on the carpet and discussed how we were going to get Jack to like me. Mel asked me for my phone and I handed it to her, she said she was going to go to text Jack, ever so slightly, dropping a hint every once and a while. I watched Mel stare intently into the phone screen. She was determined to get me my first boyfriend.
Text Messages:
Mel/Levi: Hey Jack, wyd?
Jack: Doing homework, hbu?
Mel/Levi: Just sitting here texting u. Do u mind if I tell u sumthing personal? It kinda involves something you're familar with.
Jack: Sure, what's wrong. I'll try to help!
Mel/Levi: Well, I finally decided that I was gonna come out as gay to my parents. Long story short, they hated the idea, they kicked me out and now I'll be temporarily living with my friend, Melanie.
Jack: wow, I feel super sorry for you. But I have to go now, I like to get a fair amount of sleep. I'll speak to u in person tomorrow.
Mel/Levi: Okay, see ya in school.
End of messages
Mel handed my phone back and said, "Well, he's gonna talk to your tomorrow during school. You should talk to him in gym. Lunch is gonna be cut short because of the special speaker we have coming to our school." I nodded my head and remembered what Jack looked like shirtless, then I blushed badly. Mel cooed at me and laughed.
I retaliated back, "Try seeing your crush without a shirt." She stopped laughing and I said, "Yeah, that's what I thought." Suddenly, her intercom popped to life and her dad said through the speaker, "Mel. Levi. It's time for ya'll to get some sleep. It's almost 12." I sighed and got up, stopping to help Mel up too. I chased her up the stairs and we stopped. She walked to her door and walked inside, making sure she closed it behind her. I did the same and took a deep breath when I entered. I stripped down to my underwear and climbed in bed. The sheets felt nice and warm, like they just came out of the dryer. I fell asleep instantly.
~A few hours into Levi's deep sleep~
I was in a dream. Not a good one at that. I dreamed that my parents locked me in our basement without food or clothes. Then, I dreamed they tortured me, painfully. I heard my fake screams. Eventually, they turned real and came out my mouth. I shot up and started crying, I heard the doorknob move and I saw Mel run in. She ran over to me and rubbed my back while she asked me many questions, "Levi, are you okay? Did something hurt you? I'm here if you need me."
I felt her sweater-covered arms wrap around my body. I leaned into the hug and began to explain the nightmare. The torturing and words and everything. Mel kissed the top of my head and I was, at that moment, very grateful that I lived with her.
Then, she asked the unexpected, "Levi? Do you need me to sleep with you all night to ward off the bad dreams? Or just until you fall asleep?" I was shocked but absolutely relieved.
I bit my lip, knowing this seems wrong, but it's not right? I finally said, "Please. I don't know what's gotten into me, today was traumatizing."
Mel understood, but stopped me, "First, at least put some pants on bro. Like, seriously?" I huffed but stood up and pulled out some flannel pajama pants and slipped them on.
I paused, "Do you want me to put a shirt on too?" She shook her head and I agreed. I laid back down and she snuggled up beside me. I turned to sleep on my left side, being careful not to disturb my "sister". Mel must've felt me turn over because she faced the opposite direction and snaked her arms around my torso. Her hair smelled amazing. I felt safe and my dreams felt like they were going to stay happy. She started snoring softly and I fell asleep too. Tomorrow will be better, you know it, you get to see your boyfriend-to-be, Jack, my thoughts reassured me. Deep sleep had been achieved. Good night world.
