Sitting next to each other
on my living room sofa
we sipped our tea in peace. The sweet gingery taste
felt like a well deserved reward
after a long day."You have a lovely apartment."
Lovely.
It's so tiny though.
The livingroom space was filled
mainly with plants
and books. There wasn't much space to move.
"That's what makes it homey. It's a good thing."
What?
Had I said my thoughts outloud?
No, I was sure that I hadn't slipped.
But how then?
"It's your expression." he said, as if
that explained anything."The look on your face, it seemed as if you were worried about the scattered books. It doesn't botter me."
Oh.
Maybe I had thought too much of it.
We once again
found ourselves in silence. After a moment
I decided that it wouldn't harm
to ask."Where have you been?
It's been so long since I have seen you.
It felt like you were ignoring me.
Did I do something wrong?"I blerted out all my worries
without thinking. Before I could say anything
he spoke."I'm sorry. It's just that I was a bit sick and didn't feel very well. I didn't want to pass it on to you."
"You can't pass a cold over the phone though."
Once again, sorry. I wasn't feeling well enough to chat."
Even though there was a voice in my head
telling me there was something off
about his excuse
I decided not to pry.The topic seemed uncomfortable
and he really did look a little pale
and under the weather. But if he really had been sick
then who had taken care of him?Had he been alone all this time.
I realized that I knew
very little about him.He always listened to me
and was interested in my day to day tasks
but he never talked about himself.
