My eyes open to see a white panel roof above me with lights scattered across it. I look around and find Alex sitting in a chair next to me with her eyes closed.
"Alex, babe are you awake?" I ask the question sceptically. I wait a few minutes. "Alex." This time I say it louder. She starts to move.
"Babe? Oh finally you're awake." Her eyes light up with joy at the sight of me. "You've been asleep for so long."
"How long?"
"Just about eleven hours." Her words surprise me. I can't believe I've been out that long. She grabs my hand. "But you're awake now, that's what matters." She pushes the button to call the nurse. "He woke up." Alex tells the nurse as she walks in.
"Hey there, Tyler. How do you feel? Any pain?" The nurse asks me after she stops at the foot of the bed.
"I feel fine, no pain." Not yet. "Can I ask what happened?"
"You were hit on the driver side in a car by a truck." Her tone is dreary. "You're lucky to be in the condition you are. You have no broken bones, no internal bleeding. Worst injury you sustained is a fracture in your leg. I'd say your a superhero but I'm smart enough to know those aren't real." The woman leaves us in the room. I look at Alex and smile. She looks at me and giggles.
"What are you smiling for?" Her voice sounds so caring and so happy.
"My amazing and beautiful girlfriend." My voice shakes and cuts out at points. Alex smiles and blushes. She looks away from me. I extend my arm. "Don't turn away, you're too adorable." She looks back. A tear is in her eye. "Babe, why are you crying, I'm fine."
"I know it's just me." The words ring in my ears and I sit up. "The doctors x-rayed me and found a tumour. They said I have a year tops. The only hope I have is that they can remove it or I can get a new lung." My eyes start to tear up. I can't believe the words I'm hearing. My jaw drops and I have nothing to say. Alex stands up and lays down next to me in the bed and we cuddle just like we did in my bedroom.
