"Please be safe." You whisper, clutching onto the crisp uniform of your soldier. Sergeant James Barnes wraps his arms around your waist and let himself pepper your face with brief kisses full of love and worry.

The waves lapped against the crowded dock, and the smell of salt water filled your nose. The troop ships were patiently waiting to be boarded.

"Listen to me, (y/n)." Sergeant Barnes gently cups your face in his strong hands, tilting your head so that your eyes meet. Your faces are so close you can smell the peppermint on his breath and the aftershave he wore.

"Darling," He takes a shaky breath, voice quivering, and closes his eyes for a moment. "I love you. I love you so much. No matter what happens.."

"Bucky," You whimper, voice cracking as you touch his neck with trembling hands.

"Baby Doll, I need you to promise me that no matter what happens, you'll take care of yourself." Bucky sets his jaw when he sees the tears starting to stream freely down your cheeks.

"I-I know. I will." You cry. "I love you."

The sergeant bites his lip and pulls you into his chest, cradling your head in his hands. You hear his heart thumping wildly through his uniform. He's terrified. But your boy keeps his composure, and you hold on to him tighter.

Time was passing quickly. The last moments spent with your Sergeant James Barnes were slipping away, and by the time you've pulled back from his embrace, your cheeks are wet and sticky with tears, and you were trembling so hard your teeth even chattered. The hair you had pinned back was starting to fall out of place and messily frame your face.

"Hey," The soldier murmurs gently, tucking the loose strands of hair safely behind your ears. "It's going to be okay."

You only nod your head, fearing that you'll burst into more tears if you try to speak. You hold eye contact with him, knowing that you will soon be desperately missing the mesmerizing colors in his ocean eyes, and the loving gaze that you often caught them holding towards you.

You lift your hands to his clean shaven face, caressing his jaw with your thumbs and stretching your hands to cup the back of his neck. You drank in every detail of James Barnes as you could; the way his smooth skin felt under your fingertips, the way he had captured his plump bottom lip between his teeth, the way his eyelashes fluttered as his glassy eyes scanned over every inch of you and the way his hands squeezed nervously at your waist. Your heart was already sick at the thought of him leaving.

"Attention, 107th! We are now ready for boarding!"

The voice sent violent waves of dread through your body, crashing in your heart like the water below the docks. Heartache coursed through your veins like poison, and you found yourself tightly locked around James Barnes' neck, enclosed in the tight, desperate grip of his arms.

The soldier presses frantic kisses to your lips, beginning to shake in fear. 'I love you's' were pouring out of your mouths as if they were a plead and drowning in salty tears.

Sergeant James Barnes slipped slowly from your grasp and walked bravely onto the troop ship, hands clenched tightly at his sides.

You watched the ship on the sea, tightly clutching the railings of the dock until you could no longer see it on the horizon. Your tears fell into the salty waves below, heart aching miserably.

It was late in the afternoon by the time you will yourself to get up and go home. You'd spent hours clinging to the rails with your face buried in your hands, desperately wishing the bulky troop ships carrying your soldier would reappear on the horizon. Your cheeks were red and splotchy and your eyes were puffy. You'd cried your heart out on the lonely dock, knowing that every passing moment carried James Barnes farther and farther away from you.
