•••"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer!!"
"Had a very shiny nose!!"
Ah, yes, the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of your apartment.
You roll over in bed, curling your legs up closer to your upper body for warmth.
"And if you ever saw it,"
"You would even say it glows!!"
The voices were loud and off-key, full of holiday cheer and laughter. They belonged unmistakably to your roommates.
As you trudged downstairs, still sleepy, you heard the radio playing in the living room. It certainly wasn't as loud as the voices of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, who were currently dragging a large pine tree through the door.
"(y/n)! You're awake! Just in time, too, we just got here." Steve waves.
"Having trouble?" You ask, gesturing to the tree in the doorway while heading to the kitchen to make a pot of coffee.
"Not at all!" Bucky cheers, nose and cheeks pink from the cold. Evidently, they really did just arrive.
"Where..?" You point at the tree, running a hand through your messy hair.
"They were selling them at the park!" Steve answers happily as they finally manage to drag the small pine into the apartment with one last heave.
You pour fresh coffee into your favorite mug, leaving the remains in the pot for the boys to fuss over. Bucky and Steve cheerfully rush to the kitchen to get a cup as you sink into your chair at the table.
Wakefulness soon creeps into your body following the coffee. You go back to your room to get ready for the day, pulling on a soft Christmas sweater to get into the spirit matching that of your roommates.
When you return to the living room, Bucky and Steve were already settling the tree into the annual "Christmas-Tree-Bucket". The tree was beautiful. You complimented the boys' taste as you admire the crisp, green needles.
Bucky, being the tallest, pulled the cardboard box of ornaments off of the top shelf in the hallway closet. You didn't have very many ornaments, but the ones you did have were beautiful.
You and Steve frantically coach Bucky into to the living room, ("Watch out, Bucky!" "Be careful, Bucky! Oh my God, don't drop them, Bucky!") directing him to place the fragile box of beloved glass ornaments on the floor by the couch.
"Whew," Steve dramatically wipes sweat off of his forehead after Bucky stands back up straight.
"Mission accomplished!" Bucky grins proudly, gently swatting at Steve's shoulder.
You begin to pop popcorn in the kitchen and retrieve cranberries from the cupboard. Steve gathers spools of thread and needles. Bucky provides the entertainment and turns the radio up.
As soon as all of the supplies are ready, the three of you sit in the floor together, stringing popcorn and cranberries on thread for garland.
Decorating for Christmas, specifically putting up the tree, was an all day thing. You didn't have the money to buy the fancy decorations in the stores, so you made your own.
The radio plays holiday tunes in the corner.
"You better watch out," Bucky grins, stringing another piece of popcorn.
"You better not cry," You follow up with the next line as you add a cranberry to your strand of garland.
"You better not pout, I'm tellin' you why," Steve grabs another handful of popcorn from the bowl.
"Santa Claus is comin' to town!" The three of you sing together, laughing as the radio plays in the corner.
When you finally string together all the garland you can, it is time to decorate the tree. The box of sparkling, glass ornaments is pulled to the middle of the room.
The three of you wrap the tree in your homemade popcorn-and-cranberry garland, singing along to the Christmas songs playing on the radio.
Your homemade ornaments are in a separate box. These were the ones you all used before buying the beautiful glass ones. However, some of these homemade decorations were just as beautiful, and they added the perfect touch.
You carefully and strategically hang the delicate glass ornaments and homemade paper ornaments. The tree looked beautiful.
When you run out of ornaments, you, Bucky, and Steve step back to admire your work.
"One more thing!" Steve pulls the tree topper out of the ornament box - a small, golden-haired angel. "It's your turn to do the honors this year, (y/n)." Steve offers you the angel and you take it with a smile.
You walk up to the wonderfully decorated Christmas tree, looking up at the very top branch.
"I'll need a chair or something." You say with a giggle. With just your height, you were not able to reach the top of the tree.
"On it!" Bucky rushes to the kitchen to retrieve one, and returns with a bar stool.
"Please don't fall, Doll," Bucky places the stool in front of the tree. "We don't want to spend Christmas in the hospital."
"Of course," You nod with mock sympathy. Steve holds your hand for balance as you climb onto the stool, cradling the golden-haired angel in your other hand.
"Spot me," You say with a nervous laugh as you stand up straight on the stool.
Bucky moves to the appropriate position on the other side of the chair and holds his arms out.
You carefully balance on your tip toes, leaning forward to place the angel on the top branch without hitting the tree or any of the expensive ornaments.
You delicately place the angel, holding it with both hands and slowly releasing to make sure it will stay. The task was a success.
"I did it!" You cheer, stepping back to admire your work. Upon reflection, you remembered you were standing on a stool - a particularly small stool - that did not provide a step back on solid ground. But it was too late, and with a squeal of surprise, you were falling backwards to the ground.
Bucky catches you. "Holy shit!" He howls with laughter, holding you bridle style while nearby, Steve nearly has an asthma attack.
"The tree... Oh my God... The tree!" Steve wheezes, clutching a hand over his heart.
"The tree?!" You exclaim as your pounding heart returns to a normal pace. "What about me, Steven?!"
Bucky is still laughing as he stands you up on your feet.
"Thanks for spotting me, Buck." You pat his shoulder.
"Anytime," Bucky giggles. He then pulls you and Steve into his side for a group hug.
You all three stand together and admire the completed tree.
"It looks wonderful." Bucky compliments, his arms draped over your and Steve's shoulders.
"It does." Steve agrees.
You grin. "Merry Christmas, guys."
