•••"Do you think I should wear the red dress or the pink one?" You ask, holding the dresses up, one in each hand.
"They look the same to me." Steve observes politely.
"Steve! Please?" You wail, laughing nervously.
"The pink one's nice." Steve replies.
"Alright, I think so too." You thank him and hurry to change into the pink dress.
Today was the day you were going on a date with a guy you had eyes for, Cal Anderson. You'd liked him for a while, and he flirted quite a bit with you. And to your thrill, he asked you on a date for today.
As you prepare yourself for the outing, you hear Steve and Bucky's voices floating up the staircase, but both were too far away to make out any words.
Once ready, you happily walked down the stairs, clutching a small purse in your hand.
"Told you the pink one was nice." Steve smiles at you from the kitchen table, cutting into a potato.
"Thanks," You say, twirling a little so the skirt flows.
"What do you think, Buck?" You ask Bucky, who was sitting on the other end of the table and had just moodily stabbed a piece of potato with his fork.
Bucky looks up at you with an expression you didn't recognize, but he smiles quickly at you. "You look good, (y/n)."
"What about the lipstick?" You worry, rushing to the mirror on the wall. "You don't think it's too dramatic, do you?"
"It matches your dress," Steve observes. "I think it's fine. What about you, Buck?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah. It's fine." Bucky doesn't look up, but you thought you heard a tinge of sadness in his voice. You didn't think he had any reason to be upset, but felt a bit down at his reaction.
"Alright, well, I was supposed to meet him at 6 o'clock. And that's in five minutes so I guess I'd better go." You say, heading to the door.
"Be careful! Have fun!" Steve calls, waving as you leave the apartment.
You were supposed to meet Cal on the corner, so that's where you went. Five minutes passed and you checked your watch. He was late.
But moments later, you recognized him walking almost lazily to the corner. Cal gave you a half cocky grin as he approached and greeted you.
"So, where d'ya want to eat, (y/n)?" Cal asked, placing a hand on the small of your back as you start to walk down the street.
At first, you were taken aback that he hadn't planned anything, but shrugged, smiled, and replied. "Anywhere is fine, really."
You guessed he was leading you to the diner on 16th street, but when you passed it by, you were slightly surprised. Cal must know of a different place in town, you decided.
When Cal stopped in front of Rick's Diner & Bar, your statement "Anywhere is fine, really." bit at the back of your mind, because this wasn't exactly your idea of a place for a first date. But he held the door open for you and you entered the small building with a hopeful heart.
It wasn't that bad inside. The bar was clean, and a little busy. The smell could have some work, but otherwise bearable.
You'd only been in this place once or twice, each time with Steve or Bucky. It was only slightly familiar, and you followed Cal to the bar and seated yourself beside him.
