Aragorn was kneeling on the ground, ear pressed to the dirt, whilst I crouched and tried to ease the pain from my arrow wound.
“Their pace has quickened. They must have caught our scent. Hurry!” he said leaping to his feet and extending a hand which I took before we began running off again followed closely by Legolas with Gimli trailing behind.“come on Gimli!” I heard Legolas shout and I vaguely heard the dwarves muttered responses.
We were running between to large boulder walls, following the uruk-hai trail when I saw something familiar. I knelt down and picked up out of the packed dirt one of the Lorien brooches.
“not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall” I said looking at the brooch
“they may yet be alive” Legolas said hopefully from behind me
“Legolas is right, there may yet be hope” Aragorn agreed “less than a day's journey ahead! Come” I picked myself up from the ground and continued running. I could feel a fog settling over my mind, for I could not hear what Legolas had shouted to Gimli.
“Alaylyn” I stopped at the sound of my name and saw Aragorn “you are worse than this morning” he said
“of course I'm worse, I need time and stillness, both of which we don't have” I said reaching into one of the small pouches at my waist and pulling out a narrow needle and some elvish threads. Slowly I began sewing the skin back together, ignoring everything else.
“-Legolas, what do your elf eyes see?” I heard Aragorn ask as I finished and readjusted my tunic, mail and tabard.
“The uruks turn northeast” he said looking out across the plains of Rohan. “They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!”
“Saruman” I cursed.
*
The sun rose and still we ran, tracing the uruks.
“red sun” I said to Legolas
“blood has been spilt this night” he agreed
The sun was high in the sky when we saw the riders. The four of us quickly ducked behind a large boulder, shielding us from the rider's eyes.
The thundering of hooves signaled that the riders had passed by us. I had seen the crest they bore and recognised it.
“Aragorn” I whispered, turning to face him “It's the riders of Rohan” understanding he nodded and stood stepping from behind the boulders.
“Riders of Rohan!” he called “what news from the mark?” instantly the group of riders arced, turning back toward us. Legolas, Gimli and I had stepped out to stand beside Aragorn and soon we were surrounded.
“What business does a man, two elves and a dwarf have in the riddermark?” the leader asked, mistaking me for an elf. “speak, quickly!” he commanded
“give me your name horsemaster and I will give you mine” Gimli demanded and the man dismounted after handing his spear to another
“I would cut off your head dwarf” he growled “if it stood but a little higher from the ground”
“and you would die before your stroke even fell” Legolas threatened, bow raised with and arrow already fitted and aimed at the man, who I know recognised as Eomer.
I moved one of the many spears that were now pointed at us as I tried to take a step while Aragorn lowered Legolas bow
“Eomer, we are not your enemy” I said taking a step forward “it is I Alaylyn of the northern rangers”
“Lady Alaylyn” he said inclining his head while holding his hand up so the spears were no longer to be leveled at us “I mistook you for an elf” he said
“i noticed”
“what bids your return to Rohan and who are your companions?” Eomer asked
“this is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, Gimli son of Gloin and Legolas of the woodland realm” I said “they are friends of Rohan and your king, Theoden”
“Theoden no longer recognises friend from foe, not even his own kin” Eomer said bitterly “Saruman has poisoned the king's mind and claimed lordship over these lands. My company are the ones who remained loyal to Rohan and were banished for it. The white wizard is cunning. They say he walks here and there, disguised as an old man. And everywhere his Spies slip past our nets” he said eyeing Aragorn suspiciously
“we are not spies, we track a party of uruk-hai westward across the plain, they have taken two of our friends captive” Aragorn explained
“The uruks are dead” Eomer told us “We destroyed them in the night” I felt a sense of dread settle over me. I pushed it aside and focused on breathing.
“They're hobbits!” Gimli proclaimed desperately “did you see any hobbits?” Eomer shook his head and I could tell he did not fully comprehend what Gimli was saying
“they would be small-only children in your eyes” I explained, but Eomer shook his head again
“we left non alive. We piled and burned the carcasses there” he pointed to where a wisp of blue/grey smoke rose into the air. This time the dread settled over me with no hopes if pushing it back
“Dead?” I heard Gimli say, sorrow evident in his voice
“I am sorry” Eomer bowed his head slightly “Hasufel, Arod!” he called over his shoulder, and two horses were led to the center of the ring where we stood “may these horses bring you better fortune than their previous masters” he bid us as he handed the reins to Aragorn. He then mounted his steed, setting his helmet back upon his head “Good luck. Look for your friends, buy do not hope, for it has forsaken these lands” he bid us before turning to his men “To the north!” He ordered and with a thunder of hooves the riders began to move, weaving around us like water around a rock.
“Alaylyn” I looked to Aragorn upon one of the horses as he called my name and saw his hand extended to me. I reached up and took it.
After a moment we were settled, Aragorn behind me to keep me from falling off, because in all honesty if I fell I probably wouldn't do anything to try and prevent it.After a longer stretch of time, Gimli and Legolas we ready and we began to ride toward the wispy pillar of smoke, hoping that we would find to hobbits alive and relatively unharmed.
