I wake up with the sound of my alarm going off and I turn in my bed to shut the damn thing off. It's already Monday and I have to be at the magazine in an hour. The weekend passed in a blur, Hanna and Katia made sure to show me the city and have lunch in every good restaurant that they knew. It's so much fun to be with them again, I missed them a lot and now that we are together again, it seems like we never had been apart from each other.
I get out of bed and make my way to the bathroom to have a quick shower. I really need to cause a good first impression at work, and these thoughts going trough my head are making me a nervous wreck. The warm water hits my skin and I feel more calm and my nerves relax under the water. It will be hard for me to adapt in work, I already know that, and it makes me nervous even thinking about it. After a few more minutes in the shower I get out and dry myself before going to my room to start searching what the hell should I wear to work. I have so many clothes and I never know what to wear. After trying two outfits I decide to wear a black pencil skirt and a white blouse with my leather jacket. London weather is always unpredictable and even though it's sunny outside we never know when it will start raining again. When I arrived in the kitchen, after putting some light makeup and my high heels, I find my friends already having breakfast.
"God morning girls!"
"Bitch you don't need to speak so loud in the morning." Katia says while drinking her coffee.
"Morning Mary! Don't mind her, she isn't a morning person." Says Hanna, finishing cooking the pancakes.
"Yeah I can see that." I laugh looking at Katia.
"So, are you nervous for your first day at the job?" Hanna asks me sitting beside me.
"I'm so nervous, you have no idea. You know I'm not a very approachable person when people first meet me."
"Hey, you don't have to be nervous, I'm sure everyone will receive you well in the magazine. I'm pretty sure you will even make friends in there." She says.
"I agree with Hanna, you are a great person. I'm sure everything will be alright." Katia says.
" I hope you are right. Well I have to go now, I still have to get the tube. Thanks for the support girls. Love you." I say grabbing my purse and getting out of the apartment.
I descend the four flights of stairs and make my way to the underground. It doesn't take long to arrive at the building were the magazine takes place. I look up and I realize that the magazine is way bigger than I thought. The building must have at least forty floors. I get inside and look for the elevators, as much as I hate them I am obligated to take it, I'm not gonna take forty flights of stairs, no way in hell. I have this phobia of elevators, one time I got stuck inside one for two hours and since then I always take the stairs. I get inside and press the thirty floor, praying to God that this thing doesn't get stuck. When I arrive at my floor I make my way to the front desk, where is a red hair girl tapping on the computer.
"Hi, I'm Mary. I'm the new article writer for the literature column."
"Hi, welcome to Another Women Magazine. I will show your desk in a minute, first I have to give you this card that you have to pass in this machine every time you arrive and leave the office. It's just to control your work hours. By the way my name is Olive, sorry for not introducing myself right away." she says smiling at me.
"Oh no it's ok." I say smiling.
"Come with me, I will show you your desk. You will be sharing it with someone else, I hope you don't mind." She says while making her way through the office and me following her.
"No I don't mind at all. The office is always so empty like this?" I ask, while looking around me.
"No, you are ten minutes early. You will see, when the clock strikes 9 you will be overwhelmed with so many people here." She laughs.
We stop in front of a big desk with two Apple computers across each other. One side of the desk is filled with papers and folders in every color, even photographs. It must be the side of the person I'm gonna share my workplace with. The other side, on the other hand, is completely empty, besides the computer, a stack of papers and a cup with pencils and pens inside.
"This is your desk. If you need anything don't hesitate to ask me, ok?" Olive says.
"Ok. Thank you so much Olive." I smile.
"You're welcome"
She goes to the front office leaving me alone. I decide to start making myself comfortable, I take all my notes about the book I'm reading for the column, my phone and my iPad. I have to bring some things to make this desk look more personal. I turn on the computer and login to my magazine email and found an email from my boss welcoming me, and some others already asking me to give them updates about the developments of my article. I start typing my notes in the computer when I hear the chair in front of me being pushed and a blond girl sits in it, huffing. She looks at me and smiles.
"Hi! You must be the new girl, for the literature column, right?" She asks.
"Yeah, that's me."
"Oh, sorry. I'm Gemma." She says offering her hand to shake.
"I'm Mary. Nice to meet you" I say smiling at her while grabbing her hand.
"Nice to meet you too. If you need any help around here or something with your article, you know get outsiders opinion, I'm here."
"Thanks. I'm sure I will need your opinion in every single one of them. I like to ear some opinions about what I write before I send it to print."
"Just like me. I'm the author for the social column and I like to hear others people opinions too. You don't seem and sound English, were are you from?" She asks me while taking a notebook from her purse.
"I'm Portuguese. I arrived in London two days ago, actually."
"Really! I always wanted to visit Portugal, it's in my list of places to visit. It must be amazing living there." She says looking at me.
"Yeah it is. How about you, you are from London or from outside the city?" For someone who is so closed off to people you are going pretty good Mary, just keep going.
"I'm from outside, from a small town in Manchester, it's called Holmes Chapel. I'm sure you never heard of it." She laughs
"You are right, never heard of it." I laugh with her.
"Do you wanna join me and Olive for lunch? There's a little caffe down the road, with amazing food. It's like our place of election for lunch hour." She asks me while tapping in her computer.
"Yeah sure, I would be happy to join you."
We end our conversation and I'm pretty happy that I have Gemma as a desk partner. She seems like a friendly person and for our talk I could see we are gonna be friends in no time. My first day is going very well and nothing like I imagined it would be.
