"hey are you okay? "

"Not really sure Martha.
Our stories would be published in next week's edition of the Times news paper and am having this kind of weird feeling about it.

"the deed has already been done Paula so you should get over it already and move on.
We can only hope everything we did would achieve a good course"
Martha said calmly trying to cheer me up

"thank you babe. I really needed that"
Paula said as she hugged her friend tightly.

"hey mum"

"hi baby"

"how was your day?"

"aside from the thousand and one scripts I had to read today, I had a pretty good day".

"how did yours also go?" She asked

"it was just OK. I had to leave school early cos I had a headache. "

"how are you feeling now? And why didn't you call me or your dad when you got home?
Mrs Kern asked worriedly.

"it was nothing mum
I just needed to be alone."

"you don't have the right to decide that by yourself young lady so the next time you leave school early, you would call us. Do you hear me!
Mr Kern exclaimed angrily

"Kern relax.. It was a mistake. She's dealing with a lot lately so I understand why she would want to be alone.
Mrs Kern explained trying to calm her husband.

"that is no excuse honey.. We've all been there growing up and I want her to see a friend in us so that she can discuss those kinda issues with us without making decisions on her own. What if she hadn't gotten home safely and maybe she was abducted on her way home?
Would you have been calm about it? "
Mr Kern elaborated

"it's funny how you're gone for almost a year and expect things to fall in your favor after neglecting what you claim is the most important part of your life...well what am trying to say is that; I would have confided in you if you had been around when mum and I needed you.
Paula exclaimed and run to her room in tears.

"come back here young lady, I am not done with you yet"
Mr Kern ordered
But it fell on death ears as Paula slammed the door behind her after entering her room.

"I think you were too hard on her Kern. She's an adolescent and she would obviously have mood swings as time goes on but that doesn't mean we should be hard on her; that would only push her further away from us.
Mrs Kern elaborated

"she just walked out on me; did you see that Evelyn?"

"No Kern I didn't cos from what I saw, she walked out on both of us because we weren't understanding and she felt she couldn't confide in us".
Am sorry Kern I can't do this any longer, am going to bed.
Mrs Kern said and also stormed out of the hall.

Back in her room, Paula sobs as she listens to her parents argue about who was the best parent.
Then her phone rings.

"hey bestie "

"Hi Martha"

" you left school early today ,what happened?

"it's nothing babe, I just wasn't myself.. I needed some alone time"

"that's okay I understand you but next time please confide in your bestie first okay?

"yes mum" Paula replied jokingly

"Am not done talking to you Evelyn , get back here! Mr Kern ordered in a loud tone

"hey Paula, is everything alright at home? I just heard your dad yell at your mum".

"it's nothing to worry about, just normal married couples quarrel.
Paula replied trying to sound funny.
But deep down, Martha knew something was wrong but she just has to trust her friend to tell her at her own time.

"Giving back to our Society story writing Competition"

Microphone in the hall way*

Principal Domenic,
Good morning to you all; it's with great pleasure to announce the winner of the story writing competition which was organized by the New York Times and I am proud to say that it's a student of Roosevelt High.
It's our very own Ashley Paula Kern.
According to the Times News Paper, she wrote the best nonfiction story comprising of events that really happened to her and around her and from the investigations they carried out, their answers corresponded to the events of the story.
So Paula if you're listening, please see me in my office.
And students, don't forget to visit the website or in the Times news paper for the full stories of all the candidates.
Thank you for your time.

"congratulations Paula" Mia said as she hugged her friend.

"thank you" she replied as she tries to move away

"hey are okay? You don't seem happy about your win.

"am okay, just shocked; I mean I wanted to win badly but now that I've won, I just keep asking myself if it was worth it..

"what are you talking about Paula? Mia asked shockingly

"I think what she's trying to say is that, she's lost for words.. It came as a surprise to her and she's just lost for words to express herself " Martha budged in to save her friend who was making a complete a** of herself.

"thanks for saving me there babe"

"you're welcome and now, put a smile on that face and go meet principal Domenic.
He's waiting.

"OK babe" Paula responded with a sigh

"Martha wait, what was that all about?
Isn't Paula happy she won?"
Mia asked curiously

"of course she is... It's just that she's dealing with a lot at home that's why she hasn't been herself lately but I know she's strong and she's gonna overcome whatever it is "

"are her parents getting a divorce?" Mia asked

"No they aren't " Martha answered

Cafeteria
conversations at the "G3" table.

"have any of you read Paula's million dollars story on the website? " Cindy asked sinisterly

"no I haven't but I will do that when I get home" Emily replied

"same here" said Evelyn

"well I think you all should cos there's a chapter about everyone in the "G3" group in her story " Cindy added

"what are you talking about Cindy? "
They asked in unison

"lemme not spoil the fun, just visit the site... Will you? " she said as she dug into her food

A moment of silence later, they heard giggles and laughter from their colleagues at the cafeteria and they kept pointing at them as they whisper.
