Kimberly's POV
I felt my cheeks turn bright red. They burned and I felt my breath quicken. I drew in a deep breath and then exhaled. I became extremely sensitive to the slit by the side of my dress.
What the hell was he doing to me?
I cleared my throat and then shifted my gaze to the contract before the door flung open. I whirled around quickly as the tension in the air died down.
"Your family is ready for you." Paul said slowly. I relaxed.
Saved by the bell.
I turned to face him, one eyebrow raised.
"Ready when you are." The corner of his mouth lifted as though he'd felt my anxiety. Sensed my relief. My knees bolted. I drew in a deep breath and then nodded.
"Let's get this over with."
He got up from the chair and then flung his blazer over his body. He walked with such confidence... such sophistication.
"Let's go." He stretched his hand towards me. I drew in a deep breath, willing my mind to stay calm. My eyes moved down to his obviously manicured finger nails before I stretched my hand towards him. He took my hands in his, sending a thousand vibes down my spine.
His hands were so huge...so warm.
He led me towards the door, and then towards the elevator. We got in with Paul behind us. He turned to face me.
"When we walk out these doors, I'm Keenan to you." He told me and then the elevator doors shut close.
I was really doing this.
Ruby's POV
My eyes surveyed the feast in front of me. There was practically nothing you'd desire that wasn't here. My mouth watered. It all looked so delicious, plus I couldn't remember the last time I had a home cooked meal.
The Monroes were all gathered around the table and thanks to Roxi, I had gotten acquainted to most of them. I watched Roxi steal another quick glance at the man who sat beside her, who from what I'd noticed, had been exchanging weird body languages with one of the maids since the meal was served.
He was definitely fucking her.
Or at least he wanted to.She had a smile on her face but I was beginning to notice just how thin it was. Willian Olsen, co CEO of their company and also Roxi's husband. According to the internet, they had been married for about six years.
Yes, I googled them. The popular Mr and Mrs Olsen.
They'd been labelled one of the best couples in the business in the world. But looking at them now, they were far from being the best."You should try the turkey, Ruby. Its delicious." She said finally, breaking the awkward silence in the dining room.
Finally!
Somebody said something.
"Mum made it herself." She continued. I offered her an awkward smile as she helped me with a huge chunk of turkey.
"Thank you." I helped myself with a much smaller piece and then smiled. "It's delicious, Mrs. Monroe." I told the woman who sat across me. She smiled warmly, bringing a little bit of colour to my cheeks. I admired Elizabeth Monroe. I had since I was ten and sitting across her felt like a dream come true. Looking at her, Roxi had taken after her quite a lot. The healthy skin, flawless hair, doleful eyes and mind blowing dimples. I could see where they all got their good looks from.
"It really is delicious mum. "Jase said after a short moment. "What'd you put in it? More heroin?" He grinned. For a moment, silence filled the room and when my mother gave questioning look, I shrugged, pretending I hadn't noticed the awkward glances the Monroes exchanged among themselves.
Until Elizabeth chuckled, easing the tension.
"No Jase." She said rather calmly. "Just normal spices." She continued and then put another piece of meat into her mouth.
Awkward.
"That's a relief." Jason sighed, helping himself with some spaghetti from one of the serving plates. "Don't want another sudden death-"
"Jason!" Roxi exclaimed.
"Calm down Roxi, I was talking about the turkey." He grinned. I stole a quick glance at mother.
She had stopped eating.
"So Ruby-" Roxi turned back to me in an awful attempt to change the subject. "Tell us about yourself. Where're you from?"
"I uh-" I stammered, quite startled by how quickly I had become the center of attraction. "I grew up in Beverley hills but my mum and I, we move around quite a lot." I answered slowly.
"She's a dancer." Mother cut me off. "A ballet dancer." she continued. I turned red immediately.
"Was a dancer." I said slowly. Silence filled the room for a while before Andre spoke.
"If you don't mind me asking, what happened?" He finally looked up from his plate. I inhaled deeply.
"Injury." I buried my gaze in my food and then stuffed a spoon full of vegetables into my mouth.
"I knew you looked familiar."
Dear God.
"You're that dancer who flunked her routine in the semifinals aren't you?" He rose an eyebrow. "Yeah, your failure really made the headlines b-"
"Jason Alexander Monroe!" Roxi snapped.
"My bad." He didn't even seem sorry. "Must be the fruit juice."
The sarcasm in his voice told me he was intentionally trying to make a fool out of me, mock me, annoy me. I clenched my fist and then exhaled. "Well, this has been a wonderful day. I'm afraid I'll have to return to my room now." He said making a move to stand.
"You will stay."
There was a shift in the air at the sound of his voice.
It was cold, demanding and calming all at once.
Keenan Monroe dropped his fork and then sighed.
"Sit down, Jason." He continued. Jase scoffed and then raked his hand through his hair. "Sit." He said slowly. Jase let out a sigh of frustration before he sat down.
"I was going to wait till after dinner for the sake of our visitors but since the only thing you all want to do is sit around and act like grown babies, then I might as well say it now." He paused. The silence in the room showed he had their full attention.
"I'd be getting married in two weeks." he announced.
Silence
Deadbeat silence
The clattering sound of glass drew everyone's attention to the china glass one of the maids had accidentally dropped and my eyes suddenly caught sight of the lady who had been sitting perfectly still all through the night.
This was turning out to be one hell of a dinner.
