It's the next day and we find ourselves at the same restaurant as yesterday for lunch. Denton walks in and slams a paper on the table.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Denton says.
Jack grabs the pape and studies it. I lean over his shoulder trying to get a better look.
"Where's me picture?" Race says, pushing through the crowd.
Spot shoves through everyone and finds himself up next to me. "Where is it, wheres does it say me name?" Spot asks.
"Wouldya quit thinkin' about you's self?" Jack tells him. I laugh at this and look over at Spot. He's smiling.
"You got us on the front page!" David exclaims.
"You got your selfs on the front page." Denton replies. He smiling. He's very happy for us. "Just gotta make sure you stay there."
"Yours in the papes your famous! When yours famous, they's give ya what eva you's wants!" Race slams his hand on the table. "That's whats so great 'bout New York!"
"A pair a new shoes with matchin' laces." Mush sings.
"A permanent box at the Sheepshead races!" Race says.
Spot then speaks up, "A porcelin tub with boilin' wahta!"
Kid stand up on the tables, "A Saturday night with the Mayor's daughter!"
Race then jumps up on the table with him,
"LOOK AT ME, I'M THE KING OF NEW YORK
SUDDENLY, IM RESPECTABLE, STARIN' RIGHT ATCHA
LOUSY WITH STRATURE!"
Jack then grabs the newpaper from his hand,
"NOBBIN' WIT ALL THE MUCKETY MUCKS
I'M BLOWIN' MY DOUGH AND GOIN' DELUXE!"
We all start singing with them,
"AND THERE I BE
AIN'T THAT PRETTY?
IT'S MY CITY
I'M THE KING OF NEW YORK!"
"A corduroy suit with fitted knickers!" Boots says.
"A mezzanine seat to see the flickers!" Les pipes up.
Snipeshooter then props up on a chair, "Havana cigars that cost a quarter!"
David then yells, "An editors desk for the star reporter!"
We all then sing,
"TIP YOUR HAT
HE'S THE KING OF NEW YORK"
Denton sits in the chair, "How 'bout that! I'm the King of New York!"
"IN NOTHIN' FLAT
HE'LL BE COVERN'
BROOKLYN TO TRENTON
OUR MAN DENTON!"
Kid throws his arms up, "Makin' a headline out of a hunch!"
"Protectin' the weak!" Denton says.
"And payin' for lunch!" Race laughs.
"When I'm at bat," Denton stands up. "Strong men crumble!"
We all begin to sing again.
"PROUD YET HUMBLE
