Chapter 12
Zach and I watched from the small window on the side, which wasn't covered by blinds, as Seb walked into the ice cream parlour and saw the look of surprise on Lex's face as she saw him. We couldn't hear what they were saying but Lex looked pretty shocked and Seb looked more scared than I've ever seen him. I gulped loudly and really began wondering if I should just let them out.
"She's going to kill him," I said out loud as I felt Zach's breath tickling the back of my neck. "She's going to kill him and he's going to die and she's going to go to prison for the rest of her life and it's all going to be my fault."
I turned around to see Zach looking at me amused.
"What? Stop smiling! Unlock the door!"
"Calm down, darling. It's going to be fine," he said, placing his hands on my shoulders. "Just eat your ice cream."
I completely forgot about my ice cream. It turned back around to face the window and watched as I stuffed my face with the ice cream.
"Does Seb know we're watching?" Zach asked quietly from behind me.
I shook my head, trying to ignore the tingles running down from my neck to my toes and tried to concentrate on what was happening inside. I couldn't see Lex anymore and was shocked for a moment before I heard the door rattling.
Both of our eyes widened as we turned to the door. I saw Seb do the same from inside out of the corner of my eye and hoped he would forgive me. Well, it was Zach's fault really.
Lex came into sight again as she stormed over to Seb and threw her ice cream in his face before slapping him.
"Ouch," Zach whispered, tickling my neck yet again. I was so close to turning round and slapping him too but my whole body was completely tense and I couldn't move as I watched them.
Lex rushed behind the counter and started lifting the containers for the different flavours of ice cream and throwing them at Seb while he just stood there. I felt silent tears running down my face now and hoped that somehow Seb could hear me apologizing to him repeatedly in my head. Luckily most of them just ended up flying around the room and not actually hitting him but he must have had at least three brain freezes by now.
"Sophie?"
I ignored Zach calling me, not wanting him to see me crying.
"Hey," he said quietly turning me around, giving me just about enough time to wipe away my tears. "Should I unlock it?" He asked, his face full of concern.
I almost wanted to laugh at how adorable he looked but controlled it, afraid it would come out more like a grunt. I shrugged my shoulders, not really sure of what to do anymore and slid to the ground, leaning my back against the wall.
"I don't know," I managed to whisper.
"Listen," he started, sitting down next to me. "If you want me to unlock it, I will. But this is when it starts to get better now and don't make me come out with sappy quotes but I think we've got to assume the worst is going to be over soon. I mean, neither of us know what to do right now so if you think this is enough then tell me. Okay?"
I looked over at him confused as he stared ahead at the park. How does he do it? One minute he's being a complete jerk and the next it's like he's the wisest person on earth.
