Chapter 24
I made a plan. I wasn't going to let people rule my life anymore. I would confront Gwen about it, and she would stop messing with us. I haven't figured out how I would get her too, but I would.
"Ommph," I mumbled as someone bumped into me in the crowded hallways at school the next day. The person didn't apologize or even give me a second look as they walked past.
Glad to know that my social status hasn't changed much.
"Where is Gwen?" I mumbled, looking around the hallways for her, but she was nowhere to be seen. Maybe, she's in her favorite hang out- the bathroom.
I pushed through the crowd and made my way to the super clean bathroom and swung the door open.
It was empty.
I groaned and walked out. Maybe Gwen just wasn't here today.
On Saturday, I was hanging out in my room when I got a call from Seth asking me to meet him outside of my house. I quickly changed out of my pajamas and threw my hair in a messy ponytail, so that I looked at least a little bit presentable.
I walked out of my house and found him there, leaning on his car. To be honest, I almost fainted when I took a look at him. He looked so good without even trying. And I was his girlfriend. I realized then, not for the first time, that I was the luckiest girl on Earth.
No exceptions.
"Hey, Sam," he greeted with a smile on his face. As I walked closer to him, he took me and engulfed me into a hug.
He smelled nice.
"Hi," I said and blushed. You'd think I would get used to him, but I just can't. He's so... there are no words to describe him.
"You want to go out?" he asked.
"Won't someone see us?" I asked, even though I was glad that we could actually go somewhere.
He shrugged. "Let them see, I just want to go out with a girl I like."
A smile appeared on my face and I'm pretty sure it looked like I had just won a million bucks or something, "Okay," I said.
We got into his car and drove for about fifteen minutes until we reached a little resturant that I've never been to.
We walked in and choose a table that had high chairs after a heated debate on whether we should sit in them or the booth.
"But who doesn't like high chairs?" Seth asked me.
"Me," I said. "They're so weird."
"Oh, come on, they're like the coolest things ever!" He retorted. "It's impossible not to like them!"
"You're such a little kid," I said and shook my head, smiling.
"High chairs are amazing."
"Whatever," I said with a roll of my eyes. I was only trying to annoy him, now.
"Girls," I heard him mutter.
After we had ordered our food and we had recieved it, we continued talking about random things, and it wasn't even weird. Our topics ranged from school, to television to anything else we could think of.
"Okay, let me go up and pay, you stay here," Seth said and went up to the cash register and got into the longish line.
I was sitting there, humming a tune, when someone came up and sat on the seat that Seth had been sitting in.
"Hello, Martin," she said.
"Gwen," I acknowledged and narrowed me eyes. This was my time to tell her to back off of Seth and Kendra and just leave me alone.
"I see that you and Seth are getting close," she observed with a nod in his direction.
"Yeah, and there is nothing you can do about it. So blackmailing Seth and Kendra is not gonna accomplish anything," I said, finally getting the words out.
But instead of crying and running away like I wanted her to, she gave me a genuinly cunfused look.
"Ew, gross, blackmailing is not my style," she said and I could tell it was sincere.
"Wait, what?" I asked, not believeing it. It had to be Gwen. She was the only one who had something against me.
"I should be asking you that Martin," she said. "I mean, why would I take time out of my life to sabatoge you? I'm going to win the talent show no matter what and Seth is last weeks news."
I was shocked. How could this be happening? If it wasn't Gwen, who?
A little later I was home when I received a call from Kendra.
"Hello?"
"You have to get here right now!" She said, sounding like someone had just chased her.
"What? What's going on?" I asked panicked.
"Brandon," she said. "He's in the hospital."
I immediately jumped from my chair and slipped on some shoes. I got the hospital name from Kendra, hung up the phone and made a mad dash outside the house, not even bothering to tell my mom where I was going.
I almost attacked the nurse behind the counter when I got to the hospital but my friends waiting in the waiting room stopped me.
"Woah, calm down." Kendra said and pulled me to sit next to her, along with Jessica, Troy and Dylan.
"What happened to him?" I asked Kendra, worried.
"Apparently, he was attacked by a group of guys just a couple of hours ago, but the guys got away," she explained.
I gasped. That was terrible! And what was the point of it? Just to cause someone pain?
Before I could say anything, Troy stood up and ran towards the bathroom, I could see tears in his eyes.
It was sort of odd to see considering he looked so rough and tough, but I didn't know him and Brandon's relationship yet. Maybe they were super close.
Finally, the doctor came into the waiting room and allowed us to go into Brandons room.
I almost didn't believe it was him. He was unconscious. But that wasn't it. He had bruises all over his face and the parts of the body I could see.
"He's got broken ribs, a broken arm and leg so he won't be able to do much for the next couple of months," the doctor said, looking at us all sadly.
"That means he won't be able to perform in the show!" Jessica said her hand covering her mouth.
"Is that all you think about, he could die!" Troy said running to Brandon's bedside.
"It's okay, man," Dylan said, trying to calm him down but he just shrugged him off.
"That was his boyfriend," Jessica whispered in my ear, looking at Troy sadly and shaking her head.
"Wait, so he's-" I stopped. It was obvious, how had I not noticed it before?
Why was I so oblivious to everything?
And that meant that this was probably a hate crime.
Soon, the doctor informed us that we all had to leave. They had to take some tests on Brandon.
I knelt by Brandon's side and whispered to him. "I'm going to win for you."
