You know you've struck gold when you're working at the local coffee shop and your heart stops. No, not literally! I was working my humble job at the cash register when I saw the most beautiful girl in the world. She had luscious brown locks, her eyes were a plethora of different colours. From blue to brown to even purple, it was a kaleidescope of colours. The best part was that she looked about 22-my age.
Pretty girl, I thought. Just my type.
"Hello, welcome to Star Koffee, how may I help you?" I said, putting on my most charming smile.
"First of all, wipe that smirk off your face or I will," she said, completely shooting me down. "I'll have a latte and an espresso, please."
"Coming right up. Can I get a name?" I tried again. At least she couldn't shoot me down this time. I was supposed to ask for names.
"Piper."
"So, Pipes-" I started, but I was cut off.
"You will not call me Pipes." she glared, those mesmerizing eyes shooting a hole through me.
For some odd reason, I felt like I was in a trance for a couple of minutes. Like I was compelled to do anything she said.
"S-sorry, Piper." I faltered. "Anyways, I was wondering if you wanted to grab a bite when I get off work." I flashed my grin again to try to win her over.
Instead, she just held up her hand. I was horrified to find a glimmering ring on her finger.
"You will not hit on me or try to take an advance on me. I'm engaged." she said in a calm and smooth voice.
I will not try and do anything to her, I thought to myself.
But then as she was waiting for her drink, whatever made me stop talking to her weared off.
I was about to ask who this douche of a fiance was, when I heard a voice. A voice that was all too familiar.
"Piper!" a guy called. I hated to say it, but the guy was good-looking. He had military cut blond hair and stunning blue eyes. He threw his arm around Piper and kissed her on the cheek. Piper smiled up at him, and in that smile, I saw that I stood no chance.
The guy's eyes widened when he looked at me. "Caleb Erwin."
Jason from first grade? How did he even remember my name?
"Jason Grace. Long time no see?" I squeaked, trying to make myself sound tough in front of a much buffer Jason Grace who towered over me now, unlike back in the first grade, where it was just the opposite.
"Why were you flirting with my fiance? Did you not see the ring?" he said calmly but his tone threatning. Lucky for me, Piper put a restraining arm on his shoulder, but her glare was on me, not him.
Thank god, the couple's order came at that moment, saving my life. "Uh, one latte and one espresso! That'll be ten bucks!" I panicked. Jason slapped the money on the counter and shot me one final hateful glare as he walked away, his arm still around Piper.
