When the elevator doors opened, I tumbled out, hungering for the fresh air. Taking a few deep breaths, I smiled widely and rushed towards the railing. Below me, the Capitol's lights glimmered, creating a trail of brightness. At this tremendous height, it looked almost... pretty. Nothing like the fakeness I saw every time I looked out of my bedroom window.
"You're not going to jump, are you?" a decidedly male voice asked in amusement behind me. I gripped the metal tighter, not looking behind me as I replied.
"Even if I was going to, I wouldn't be able to, I'm guessing."
"Your guess is correct. The Capitol wouldn't want one of their prized tributes to die before they even got to the arena." I could practically hear the grin on his face. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a pair of tanned hands come to rest beside mine.
"The Capitol doesn't want a lot of things." I answered shortly. Whoever this man was, he was intruding on my personal time and space - yeah, yeah, the roof was a public place, but still.
"True. So, which one are you, anyway? I only know mine's names." he asked. I allowed myself a small laugh.
"Electra Reine, District Five."
"Ah, silver girl. Your parade costume was quite striking, you know," he chuckled.
"Thanks to my stylist. Personally, I'm just thankful that I wasn't a lightbulb or a part of a powerline or something," I said.
"Haha yeah. At least this year mine were merpeople instead of fish or something. Last year they were goldfish. Second-hand embarrassment is a terrible friend," he remarked, but I froze up, focusing on his second sentence.
"Your tributes... were merpeople?" I asked slowly, making sure that I hadn't misheard him.
"You know... District Four, fishing?" he articulated. I stiffly turned around, backing away slightly as I did. Sure enough, he was right next to me, a stupid grin on his face. His bronze-brown hair was slightly messy and his sea green eyes glittered, even as the world around us darkened and stars began to appear in the sky. He looked perplexed at my actions, and I felt annoyance stir within me.
He didn't recognize my last name.
He killed her, and he didn't even remember her last name.
"Are you okay, Electra?" Finnick asked in concern, taking a step forward. I took another back.
"Don't talk to me." I spat, glaring at him fiercely.
"What?"
"Don't talk to me, don't touch me, hell, don't even look at me." I hissed angrily, whirling around and storming back into the elevator.
"Why are you acting like this?!" he demanded, looking irritated. He had no right to be irritated.
"Does the last name Reine ring a bell? No? How about the name Breeze Reine?"
The doors took just enough time to close for me to see the expression on his face quickly morph into a horrified look before I was whisked downstairs, heart thumping.
---
"You good, Electra?" Bolt asked as soon as I stepped back into the dining room. He, Desiree, Sean and Eleanora were all sat comfortably on the group of couches in front of the TV, watching some sort of Capitol Fashion Show.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine," I added, but he still looked unconvinced as he retook his seat.
"Whatever you say, El." He said, his attention returning to the television screen.
I sat down for a few seconds before quickly standing up again.
"You know what, I'm going to turn in early today. Night," I hurried out of the room, going into mine and firmly shutting the door.
---
"You know, our mentor was talking about you," Ocean mentioned casually the next day at training. The both of us were at the spears station, while Shark was working at the fire-making station and my allies were at the climbing station. I stiffened, my spear very nearly falling out of my hands as my grip loosened.
"Oh really?" I asked, trying to sound flippant. Ocean nodded, sending her spear cutting through the air. The pointed head sunk into the dummy's 'lungs' and she grinned victoriously.
"Yeah. Seemed really regretful about something. Have you two ever even talked?" she asked, adjusting her grip on the shaft of a new spear. Mine stabbed into the legs of the dummy and I quietly cursed.
"We met on the rooftop last night. Let's just say it didn't go down too well," I said darkly, smirking as my next throw hit where a human's heart would be. Ocean had enough sense not to ask about it, and we continued practicing in a comfortable silence.
---
"Hey. District Five." I heard a booming voice say from behind me as I lazily shot arrows at the target. Looking over my shoulder, I saw Rhys standing there, a bow in his hands. He moved forwards to stand beside me.
"Rhys," I said levelly, taking another shot. It just skimmed the border of the bulls-eye, and I watched with a hint of jealousy in my gaze as Rhys' arrow cleanly landed on the bulls-eye.
"How do you do it?" I asked. He grinned.
"Well, for one your stance is off," he began, and we spent the next half-hour practicing as he examined my shots and gave me tips. Unlike the typical brute career I had expected him to be, Rhys turned out to be an actually half-decent person, and not too bad on the eyes as well. His windswept blonde hair was messy in a way that made it look good, not the tangled bed-hair that some guys apparently thought looked sexy, and his champagne brown eyes looked quite warm and inviting.
"I've got to ask... why are you helping me?" I asked hesitantly just before he made to leave. He stopped still for a few seconds before slowly replying.
"You remind me of my sister," he said, before turning on his heel and vanishing.
---
"Reckon you're ready for the private session?" Desiree asked that night at dinner.
"I think so! Everly and May have been really helpful, Everly's really good at climbing and she showed me how to be a lot quieter and less scared as well! And May's super talented at wilderness stuff like making shelters and starting fires and identifying different edible things -" Bolt babbled on and on excitedly as I sat there silently, drinking my soup.
"What about you, Electra? Are you ready?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready."
