third pov (mitch)
Mitch woke up to a cold, empty bed once again. It was common for him. He usually went out to social outings and drank until he couldn't walk. That led him into being in someone's bed in every Sunday morning, the headache making him swear that he'd never drink again. That was always a lie, since he would end back up on the club dance floor every Saturday night and in a different bed. It was Mitch's life.
Before he met Scott, of course. Mitch was completely and utterly enamored by Scott. He was tall, blonde, blue-eyed, and so handsome. Not to mention his personality was something that everyone wished their boyfriend would have. He was down-to-earth and he geniunely cared about everyone he spoke to. He made sure that Mitch was always happy and that Mitch knew that Scott loved him very much. Mitch said it back to him with tons of hearts and kissy face emojis.
Mitch always said it back.
Was that why Scott hadn't said anything to him in the past day? Sure, he had a wedding to prepare for and sure, maybe Mitch was being clingy. He just wished that he could be in Alex's place. Why couldn't Scott's parents have met him first? It was frustrating him, he just wanted to fly away with Scott and never come back. Too bad, that dream was too good to be true.
He checked his iPhone while his eyes widened at the amount of notifications he had. He first went to his missed calls where there were several from Kirstie, Scott, Kevin, and Avi. Mitch had no clue what was going on and he was a bit nervous to find out, but he pressed Scott's name on the call log. It rang a few times, before someone had picked up.
"Is this Mitchell.. Grassi?" A female had said on the other line, her voice sounding raspy as she sniffed occasionally.
Mitch sat up on his bed and moved to the side of it so he could stand up, heartbeat almost stopping as he heard the lady speak. He cleared his throat before answering. "This is he."
How did this lady know his name and why was she calling from Scott's phone?
"Oh, thank goodness! We have been trying to get a hold of you for the past hour. I'm Scott's mother, Connie. Scott had told me so much about you." Mitch could tell that she was smiling on the other side, no matter how much pain she sounded to be in. His heartbeat started to go back to normal until he realized that she had spoken in past tense about Scott.
"What's happened to Scott?" Mitch couldn't stand to go around the bush any longer. His left hand was gripping the phone unbelievably hard.
"He was on his way to Texas to come see you, actually.. Scott had told us that he couldn't get married to Alex, because you were the one he actually wanted to marry. H-he described you as his universe and the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Both Rick and I were super excited to meet you. He was almost in town-" Connie bursted out in to sobs and someone else grabbed the phone, making sure that she didn't drop it.
When there was nothing being said, Mitch could hear the loud sobs of Connie and the beeping in the background. There were several yells as well, but they sounded to be in the distance.
"Mitch,-" The deep voice had started to say before he stopped for a moment. The brunette had recognized the voice immediately. It was Avi. "Scott got in an accident. It is so- so bad, Mitch. They don't know if he's going to make it-"
Mitch got up quickly, putting on his shoes while holding the phone up to his ear. He grabbed his car keys and rushed down the stairs, wiping the tears that collected on his face. He slammed his front door and sprinted to his car, getting inside and placing the keys in the ignition. Starting it quickly after, Mitch started to drive. "Avriel, what's the hospital name?"
Mitch couldn't handle all this at once. He needed to go see Scott. He needed to tell the man that he was so in love with him and that he would be okay, even if he wouldn't be.. He rather be the one of his deathbed if that meant Scott could live.
"We are at Medical City. M-Mitch, please drive safely. I won't be able to stand if two of my best friends are in the hospital." Avi spoke, getting choked up in the middle of his sentence. Mitch knew that Avi was trying to be strong for the rest of them. That's just how he was.
After the brunette told the other that he would be there as soon as possible, he hung up the phone. He prayed that there wouldn't be any traffic. Medical City was about thirty minutes away without traffic. Fifty minutes with traffic. Mitch could only hope that it would be without cars trying to be in his way.
-----
Thirty-five minutes later, he arrived at the hospital. Mitch quickly parked and turned off his car, running to the main entrance of the facility. The doors opened and someone embraced the boy in their arms. The brunette broke out into tears.
"Where is he? Where is Scott?" Mitch bawled, gripping the other person's shirt. The person attempted to quiet Mitch down, but Mitch didn't stop. He continued to repeat the same questions until someone gave him an answer. No one did though. Where was the man of his dreams?
-----
Once Mitch calmed down, the person hugging him, Kevin, showed him Scott's room. Mitch held his best friend's hand, hoping that he wouldn't faint at the sight of Scott.
"Are you ready?" Kevin looked over Mitch, squeezing his hand as the tears in his own eyes were trying to be unshed.
Mitch gave a quiet nod as they both stepped into the room. His eyes couldn't hold the tears anymore as they streamed down his cheeks. There Scott was, IV's hooked to every part of his skin and an oxygen mask around his mouth and nose. Kevin let go of Mitch's hand, so Mitch could walk over to him and he did.
His fingers trailed against his arm, avoiding the needles taped inside his skin and the sticky stickers making a home right next to them. They, then, went to the blonde's face, lightly tracing the bruises that colored his face and the long scratch that decorated his jawbone.
Mitch couldn't stop the tears as they fell onto the hospital blouse that Scott was wearing. He tried to blame Scott for being so stupid, coming out to see him when he could've just stayed in California, but he couldn't.
Mitch knew that this was all his fault.
And, boy, did it hurt to believe that.
