"Archie Andrews?" Kevin calls to the red head boy standing on stage. It was finally time for one of Riverdale highs most prized events, The Variety Show. Every year one of these takes place, and this year the Pussycats are headlining. Meaning we had a front seat to every audition, and in put on who gets to perform. I sat patiently on the second row of the auditorium next to Josie. Like a good friend, Veronica sat in the front seat, confident in Archie's singing ability.
I was confident in him, but getting on stage even just for an audition, was terrifying. Especially when your football friends sit in, watching you. Plus in their eyes, Archie abandoned them for singing.
"What will you be auditioning with?" He asks the boy who glances around at us nervously. His gaze always gets led back to football players, with their newly picked captain, Reggie Mantle. They sat across the seats making fun of almost everyone who went up on that stage. I was getting more and more aggravated by the minute.
"Uh, an original song I wrote called 'I'll Try'." He looks at Kevin as he grips the mic. A low feedback sound comes through the mic as a deep voice cuts through from the back.
"Try harder!" It's Reggie. After he says this the boys all break out into deep laughter. "Maybe try not sucking so much!" Then like the regular bulldogs they are, they start barking. After our talk things we're back to normal for the most part. Reggie and I still talked every day, which was a good thing.
I roll my eyes at them and then stand. I send Archie a thumbs up before moving out of the row and walking down the aisle towards the boys. I hit the row Reggie is seated on and make my way to him.
The boys begin hitting his arm as they look my way snickering at Reggie. I give them a tight smile as I take a seat next to him. He puts his legs down and turns to me in question. I smile sweetly at and lean closer to him to speak.
"Hey, Reggie."
"Gemini-" The boys laugh at him causing him to look back at them.
"Over here." I tap his shoulder. "Could you do me a favor?"
"Uh, ye-yea, anything." He gulps down slowly. I smile again and rest my hand on his shoulder, and slide it to the back of his head. They boys behind him make 'ooh' noises as I do this.
"Shut up." I pull his hair lightly and then flick his ear. He jumps at the sudden contact, coming out his dazed expression. The boys laugh harder at him as he slumps back in his chair. I wink at him as I stand and move back to my original seat as Veronica talks mostly to herself.
"Oh my god, what's happening?" She breaths as we all watch Archie's fingers shake. Josie leans forward smirking as I seat myself back next to her.
