I heard a stifled scream.
"Sadie! Alasne! Are you okay?" I turned around and around looking for them against the snow.
"What happened to me?" Alasne shrieked, as Sadie and I both ran toward her at the same time. "I'm whiter than snow!" It was true, our scales were all different colours, I was a dark shade of blue, and Sadie was the colour of clouds. Alasne looked up at me from the freshly fallen snow. Her eyes showed fear and confusion, as did Sadie's. I had to help my friends!
"Everything will be okay," I said, hoping I sounded reassuring. "Let's go to the top of the hill to see if we could use it to fly, or try to fly." We got up and started walking up the hill in silence. I started thinking. If we have powers, do they have anything to do with our normal lives? As we reached the top of the hill, I said, "okay, let's start off flapping our wings. On three. One. Two. Three." The sound of our wings beating in harmony sounded like thunder clapping. As soon as we started, a strong wind picked up carrying snow and rain, but when we stopped, it died down.
"Hunh," I thought aloud, trying to match colours to elements. "Sadie, you could be wind because you're the colour of clouds. Alasne, you could be snow or ice because you're whiter than snow."
"What is dark blue?" Alasne asked.
"Well, there is water. Remember? It was raining." Sadie suggested.
"Oh yeah, you could be right! Let's go one at a time to see if we are right." I said, taking control. "Alasne do you want to go first?"
"Sure, I guess so." Alasne said as she flapped her wings. There was no wind or rain, only gently falling snow. As she landed, ice crystals were at her feet.
"I'll go next." Sadie said boldly. She flapped her wings and instantly a strong wind blew. It sent snow crystals the way Sadie was facing. Suddenly her wings tilted forward,
and she started flying over the hill.
"Sadie!" Alasne and I screamed in unison. She immediately stopped flapping her wings and came down, a little harder than we expected. My turn, I thought. One. Two. Three! I flapped my wings as hard as I could. There was rain from out of nowhere! After a few minutes, I stopped hovering, and the rain stopped abruptly.
"Sadie, I just got an idea. Can you make the wind go again? I want to try flying around using it. Can you both come with me, just in case something goes wrong?" I asked.
They looked at each other. "Sure, We stick together." Alasne said. We all started flapping again. "On three! One, two, three!" we all tilted our wings forward and ran to the end of the hill. As we reached the edge of the hill, I hollered,
"JUMP!!"
