They laid on the soft mattress, legs tangled together, the thin material of the sheets being the only thing covering their sweaty, naked bodies.

"You're like me, aren't you?" Stefan questioned. "You're a vampire."

"Yeah," she nodded, brushing golden tresses from her face. "I am."

"Do you ever think about what your life would be like if you'd never been turned?"

Genevieve was silent for a moment, stealing a quick glance at the younger vampire. She wondered whose bloodline he descended from.

"Sometimes, yeah." Gen moved closer to him, her arm moving up to rest on his chest. "I think life would be a lot simpler. I would've been married off years ago, probably to some villager. I don't know if we would've been in love or not, I don't think it really matters. And we would kids. Lots of kids."

"Did you want kids?" His forest green eyes stared down at her curiously.

"I haven't got a maternal bone in my body," she laughed loudly. "I've always wanted to adopt a dog though – maybe two. But I never did because I've always been on the move. What about you?"

"I'd like to think that I would have met a girl and fallen in love, that we'd live out the rest of our lives being completely happy, but I don't think that was ever an option." His slightly calloused fingers traced patterns on her bare arm. "I think we would have moved away from Mystic Falls, maybe to the countryside. I still would if I could."

"I'm glad I was turned." Genevieve sat up in the bed, pulling the sheets with her. "I don't think I've heard many vampires say that, but I am. Because, yeah, my life would've been simpler but I wouldn't have been happy. I wouldn't have been satisfied; I wouldn't have been free. I guess I never knew what any of that was until I became a vampire."

"I guess I'm glad, too. If I had never turned I wouldn't have met the love of my life, even if it was only for a while," Stefan sat up next to her.

"Is that Elena?" He nodded in response and she leant her head on his shoulder. "Maybe one day we could move to the countryside and adopt some dogs."

Although Stefan knew that Genevieve was only joking, he couldn't help but feel comforted by the thought of being with her.
