Chapter 1 - Morals

"The start of a new year, Prongs," Sirius whispered into the quiet bedroom.

"Our last year," James reminded him, rolling over and putting on his glasses.

The last two summers Sirius had spent at James' house. He had to get away from his own family, and had nowhere else to stay but there. James' parents were good to him, and he would always be grateful for their existence. He was now laid on his makeshift bed, a mattress on James' bedroom floor, thinking about the day ahead. The sun was already peaking between the curtains.

"Going to get with any girls this year? It's our final round." James wiggled his eyebrows playfully.

Sirius rolled his eyes. "Probably. And I assume you're still going to chase after Evans."

"Of course I am. I have a brilliant plan this year," James said, pushing himself up.

"What's that then?" Sirius asked, bemused.

"I am going to seduce her with my fantastic Quidditch playing skills."

"I don't think she's the kind of girl to enjoy the broomstick in bed tactic."

James threw a pillow at him.

"Can you see Moony anywhere?" Sirius asked, biting his nails out of nervous habit.

James waved his hand dismissively. "He'll be here soon, stop worrying."

"We haven't heard from him all summer!" Sirius said, sweeping his hands through his shoulder length black hair.

"You guys are acting like I died."

Sirius and James jumped, almost knocking a grey-haired muggle over. Remus looked highly amused and exasperated. Peter was standing next to them, a wide grin on his face. "Shall we go?"

All four of them heaved their luggage onto the trolley Peter had with him and set off to the wall. When they got through to the other side, there were students racing around everywhere. They almost crashed into a group of fourth years that were loitering around the entrance. "Bloody idiots," Sirius muttered under his breath.

They scrambled onto the train to find a good cabin to spend the rest of their journey in. "Pete, go grab us some snacks," James said, tossing him some money. They hauled their trunks into a cabin near the end of the train, where it was slightly less busy. Peter returned a few minutes later with a pile of food in his arms.

"Nice summer everyone?" James asked, mainly to Peter and Remus. "Me and Sirius have planned some epic pranks."

"I went to Scotland for a few weeks." Peter screwed up his face. "It was even duller than this weather."

"What did you get up to Moony?" Sirius asked, leaning back and popping an every flavour bean into his mouth. He suddenly spat it out.

"Did you get vomit?" asked James, laughing at Sirius' misfortune.

"No, I got mint," Sirius said bitterly. "I hate mint."

Remus shook his head. "I didn't do much really, I spent a lot of time reading."

Sirius pulled a face.

"So guys, it's our last year here, and we're all still single." James sighed. "Which ladies do you have your eyes on this year?"

They all shrugged. "I guess you're still chasing after Lily," said Remus, rolling his eyes. "She's really not into you, you know."

"She'll come around. Look what she's missing out on," James said, gesturing to himself.

"Nothing much then mate," Sirius said, sniggering. James playfully punched him in the shoulder.

"She'd probably prefer someone who doesn't pick on her friend," said Remus, opening a textbook.

James scowled. "Well she won't have much luck then. Who doesn't pick on Snivellus?"

"Maybe if you stopped picking on him so much, she'd stop thinking you're such an asshole," Remus retorted.

"Look at Moony! Rolling out the profanities!" cooed Sirius.

"She really thinks I'm an asshole?" James said, picking the last cookie out of a packet Peter was munching on while he watched the conversation.

"Why wouldn't she?" Remus murmured.

"Well, maybe when we've pranked the Slytherins so hard that they don't show their faces in the Great Hall, she'll be impressed," said James, smiling at his idea.

"That was not the moral of this story," said Remus, shaking his head.
