--) Robyn's POV (--
I sat down on the helicopter and watched as my friends grew smaller before turning on the tablet. "You're probably wondering why we've called you back," said Agent Coulson, sitting across from me. "I'm just glad you got me out of explaining the wings" I laughed. "But in all seriousness, why are you calling me back?" I said curiously, trying to bury my anger.
"Well, today Loki, Thor's brother, returned to Earth, seemingly without any army" he said, showing me some photos on the tablet. "Only 2 hours after he had initially been spotted, a portal appeared" he said, pulling up a picture of the portal. "We don't know for sure if they're just a coincidence or not, but we're assuming he's tied to it somehow." It was huge, sitting in the sky above New York City. "Looks horribly dark" I said, wrinkling my nose. "Indeed" Agent Coulson agreed.
"So, what do you want me to do?" I asked, catching on. "I- we want you to help" he said. "Who's we?" I asked, getting my hopes up. "We as in The Avengers" he said, smiling at my enthusiasm. "We want you to help fight." I knew my face light up instantly when I said that because Agent Coulson laughed. "Are you serious?" I squealed. I had always been a huge fan of The Avengers. Agent Coulson nodded. "Of course I'm serious! I'll take your enthusiasm as a yes?" he asked. I nodded. He clapped his hands together. " Well then I guess we're going to need to get you suited up! We'll be arriving in about a half an hour" he said, getting up. "I'm getting my own outfit?" I asked, my eyes widening. He nodded, motioning for me to follow him into the back of the helicopter.
There was a room with a bench and mirror. On the bench was a blue outfit with what looked like white streaks. "Get changed and then meet me out in the sitting area and we'll talk about what you're doing." he said, closing the door. I nodded. I quickly changed out of my soggy t-shirt and shorts, and slipped into the blue outfit. It fits perfectly! I thought as I squated and stretched. It felt tight but comfortable, very good for flying. There was a hole in the back where my wings fit through. Also, there were these glove-like sleeve ending that came up and covered my fingers. I knew this was for my actual fighting power, my energy. I guess I forgot to mention that I could create light-blue (almost white) energy in my hands and whenever I used it a lot (which was close to never) my eyes turned the same colour. I slipped on the black shoes provided, looked at myself once more in the mirror and left the changing room, folding my wings so that I could fit.
I stepped back out into the sitting area. Agent Coulson smiled and motioned for me to sit down. I couldn't fold my wings really close to my body like normal, so they sat awkwardly at my sides. "So what's the plan?" I asked, impatient. He pulled out another tablet and pulled up a video. "Basically, we need you to help the Avengers fight, it's pretty simple." The video showed various Avengers fighting, from Iron Man to Captain America. They seemed to be beating the monsters but only by a bit.
Agent Coulson put his hand up to his earpiece and nodded. "We're here" he said, standing up. I stood up as well, almost hitting him with my wings. "Sorry!" I said, grinning as I stepped towards the open door. Below, the streets were filled with screaming and running people, behind them monsters. Agent Coulson came up beside me. "So do I just... go?" I asked awkwardly. He nodded, but before I could jump, he stopped me. "I almost forgot" he said, handing me an earpiece like his own. I nodded thanks and simply fell from the helicopter.
At first, I folded my wings to reach the ground faster, and unfurled them at the last moment. I smiled, breathing deeply. I loved flying. Then, seeing a monster, I produced a ball of energy in my hands and launched it at it. The monster cried out, attempting to slash me with it's claws before it was engulfed in the blue sparks.
I rose higher into the sky, searching for the Avengers. I saw Captain America fighting alone, taking out a bunch of monsters. As I swooped down, a monster snuck up behind him. Quickly I blasted it with my energy and landed. Captain America turned around and looked at me, seeming confused and slightly afraid as I walked around the monster's twitching corpse towards him.
"Hello!" I said excitedly, holding out my hand for him to shake. He looked at my warily, pondering if he should shake my hand I guessed, and then shook it. "And you are?" he asked. "My names Robyn, and I'm here to help" I replied without hesitating. Oh god I sounded so childish... I thought. "Well... it looks like we're pretty done here for now..."
Suddenly there was a buzzing in my earpiece. It was Tony Stark, calling us all back to the Stark building to regroup. I looked at Captain America as if to say, Does that mean me too? and he nodded. I smiled at took off towards the Stark building.
I landed outside the door and stepped in. I quickly regretted this. The place was a mess, broken glass was everywhere and some walls were broken. Everyone turned to stare at me, and I felt myself shrink under their gaze. "Who're you?" asked Tony, walking up to me. "I-I'm... M-My name..." I stuttered, cursing myself for my infinite shyness around all these people. I'm a twenty year old woman for crying out loud! Right at that moment, Captain America stepped in. "I see you've met Robyn" he said, smiling. I let out my breath, not realizing I was holding it. "Agent Coulson sent me today to help you guys" I said, regaining some of my courage. "Oh, well then I guess welcome to the team!" Tony said, waving his arm around the room. "And, uh, I was wondering if I could ask you about your.. wings?" he asked, examining my wings. I unfurled them to their full span, which was 14 feet. The light cream, brown speckled wings reached over the broken windows, blocking out a good amount of light. Tony examined them, obviously amazed. "Amazing..." he said, gently feeling the feathers. It sent a chill up my spine.
I gently pulled them back in against my body, and smiled. "I can also.." I said, igniting a small energy ball in my hand, almost immediately putting it out. "She looks like a freak..." murmured someone off to the side of me. I looked over and saw the god of mischief and lies himself. Loki I thought, breathless. He grinned at me, and I didn't know if I should be scared or not. "Don't mind him" said Bruce Banner, walking over as he put away his phone. "I've called SHIELD and asked them to pick us up" he continued. We all nodded and headed out the door.
As soon as we were outside, I noticed the mobs of angry citizens. Some of them had mediocre weapons. "Just keep walking" whispered Bruce behind me. I nodded, keeping my head low. I noticed Thor walking with Loki, almost as if to keep him in check, but Loki looked sad and defeated. I was wondering over that when, out of my peripheral vision, I saw a man running up to me with a knife. Before I could react, he was beside me, stabbing my leg and shouting "Freak! Freak!" over and over. I screamed in pain and frustration, throwing my fist in his direction. It connected with his nose and he fell to the pavement.
Tony came up beside me, looking worried. "Are you alright?" he asked. My hand was around the stab wound, already soaked in blood. "I-I..." I said, not sure. My foot was going numb. I walked a couple of steps and collapsed onto the ground, not being able to walk on my wounded leg. I tried to fly, but I fell miserably. "Obviously not," said Thor, leaving Loki's side and picked me up. He carefully made sure not to touch my wings and flew me to the nearby helicopter, this one bigger than the first. He dropped me off onto a seat, calling over a nurse.
Instantly they were around me, all muttering incoherent words. They cleaned the wound and bandaged my leg. I nodded gratefully saying "thank you" as they left. They smiled at me. Everyone else was getting in the helicopter. "Thanks for that" I said, turning to Thor "I appreciate it. "It was nothing, for the new winged-human!" he said in his loud voice. I smiled. Everyone else took their seats. I noticed Loki sat as far away from me as possible, probably disgusted with my "freak-ness"
Great, it's only my first day and I've managed to look like a total wimp, have to have Thor carry me to the helicopter and piss of Loki. This'll turn out great.
