Song for the chapter:
Give up the ghost by Radiohead
A Wolf at the Door by Radiohead (no, Peeta is not the wolf 😂)
Chapter 19:
Gale's POV:
"Why are you even doing this?" Peeta asks after a moment of silence. "I thought you hated me."
"I did." I say and let out a chuckle and so does Peeta. "But you remember what I said when we were in Capitol, right?"
He nods. "Yeah I remember."
"Now I know the answer. Of course it's you. Katniss needs you, she doesn't need me. We are too similar. You know, me and Katniss could be siblings." I say and smile a little. "You've crept underneath her skin, Peeta. And you cannot think that removing yourself makes her happier, because you are the only thing that can make her happy."
Peeta takes a moment to think before he says. "Are you sure about this?"
"Yeah, let's go." I say and stand up and so does Peeta.
As we begin to walk back to Katniss' house Peeta says, "She needs you too you know. You were and still are her best-friend." and let's out a chuckle before saying "I think she's a little tired of me forcing her to bake with me."
"What?" I laugh. "You forced her to bake with you?"
"I didn't work though." He says laughing too.
"Of course it didn't. Katniss can't even boil water. This must be so hard for you!"
"It is!" He says and we burst into laughter again.
As we walk back to the Victors Village, Peeta and me talk about various and random things. Turns out, Peeta isn't that bad, actually very funny and a little weird. He isn't that extremely humble (well he's quite humble, though) little coward that I always thought he was.
Peeta POV:
Gale and me stand outside Katniss' house after the thirty minutes-ish walk.
"Come on." Gale says and I open the door.
I open the door and walk to the livingroom.
She's laying on the couch staring at the wall with a blank expression.
"Katniss?" I say.
She turns around and looks at me for a while before saying, "You're pretty stupid you know."
"I know." I say and she runs up to me and hugs me tight.
I hug her back, feeling the same feeling that I always get when I touch her.
"I need you." She whispers.
I know it sounds stupid, but hearing her say that makes me feel like I finally have a cause, which I never had.
"I'm so sorry." I say.
"You should be."
"I know."
"I love you so much," She says and I hug her even tighter.
"Finally." Gale says.
Katniss turns around and asks Gale, "You weren't just on a walk, we're you?"
"No, I had to do something talk some sense into that boy." He answers
"Thank you." Katniss and I say in unison.
Gale nods and looks at us with puppy-dog eyes.
"Oh come here." Katniss laughs and Gale runs up to us and embraces us both.
"Am I dreaming?" Someone says behind us and that someone is Madge.
We all start laughing. She's right, I never would've thought that I would ever hug Gale. To me he was always just a guy that I was incredibly jealous of. But now he more. I now understand why he is so important to Katniss.
"Where's Effie?" Katniss asks.
"She's with Haymitch and Johanna." Madge answers.
"Let's play games!" Katniss almost squeals.
"Games?"
"Yeah. Dad and me always used to play these board games. I haven't played it since he died, but I still have them." She says. "They always made me so happy, and right now I want to be 'so happy'."
She runs up the stairs and comes back a couple of minutes later carrying tons of boxes.
We spend the rest of the day playing those games and laughing at each other's jokes. Like we allowed ourselves to finally be what something non of us never could be - teenagers.
