"No, no, no!" He quietly exclaimed under his breath, rapidly slipping his shoes on as he rushed throughout his house, in search for his phone. He was late, really super freaking late. He slammed the door to his house shut, locked it, and bolted out of his neighborhood.
Her sudden phone call surprised him. He hadn't seen Lorraine for more than a year and he missed her. She had feelings for him, he didn't feel the same. She ran away... and he let her. He didn't do anything to stop her from walking out of the door that day and he regretted it.
Pushing those thoughts aside, he dashed towards the park, and finally reached the bench. Oh, that bench. So many memories did that bench hold and he missed it. He never came here anymore, not after his encounter with Jamie and definitely not after Lorraine's departure.
Dominic spotted her instantly, her hairstyle seeming to not change a bit. She wore the same shoulder length braids from the first time they met, her maroon colored scarf wrapped snugly around her neck, her dark boots kicking rhythmically on the park's pavement. Her dark brown skin seemed to glow in the moonlight and it felt just like their first encounter.
"Lorraine!" He called out through the night, a grin spreading across his face. Her head snapped up and she returned his grin, she too calling out to him. He sat beside her and they talked and talked for hours upon hours. They caught up on the things they missed and spoke about their future plans. Ah, all was well.
They embraced each other in a long, warm hug for the first time in five years and for the first time, Dominic didn't want to let go in fear of losing her once more - she grew to be important to him. "I still like you and that makes me sad," she muttered into his jacket, and he understood why. She knew that he still didn't feel the same way about her.
"Well, whatever we are, I still remember the way we were," he replied, softly kissing the top of her head and hugging her tighter, closer.
"I should have never told you how I felt," she laughed, "then we wouldn't have to go through all of this. I wouldn't have gone away for five years and we'd still be friends."
He pulled away, placing a finger under her chin and lifted her head up to gaze into her dark brown eyes. "Don't think that, Lorraine. Regardless of how long you're away, we'd still be friends, I promise."
She nodded, smiling softly. "So where does this leave us now?" She asked quietly, gazing into his dark gray eyes. He honestly didn't know. They'd been apart for so long and the night she left, he wasn't sure of his feelings for Lorraine. She was never his, but losing her that day broke his heart.
"I wasn't looking when I met you, though you were the last thing that my heart expected. It wasn't love at first sight exactly, but there was a click. You were there for me when I was at my lowest, and I'm grateful for that, Lorraine," he paused. "My heart was searching desperately and the heart knows when the search is over, and I guess it's finally over."
His heart knew that the search was over.
