Prologue

Ashton shakes me by the shoulders, hard. ”Luke!” he demands. “Luke. Listen to me.”

I hang my head, tears streaming blindly from my eyes.

"When he wakes up, you need to be okay," Ash commands. "It’s not his fault, okay? It’s not his fault, you can’t let him think it’s his fault-"

A sob tears through my throat. “Ash…”

"No matter how you feel, you can’t be mad at him - not now-"

"I don’t know if I can forgive him-"

"You have to. We can’t lose Cal too."

"We haven’t lost M-" I choke on his name. My head spins as I turn away from Ashton and collapse into a stiff, waiting room chair, far too tired, drunk, and terrified to deal with the conversation.

"Luke."

I ignore Ash, burying my head in my hands and thinking back to the morning, waking up tangled in Michael’s arms, my head tucked under his chin.

This can’t be happening to me. To us. Not now.
