The next morning, I wake to the sound of my alarm. I really need to change it. I'm surprised it doesn't give me a headache every morning. I go through my morning routine and eat some cereal and drink some coffee. I grab my red leather jacket and keys and head out to the station. I arrive before the others. Not surprised. Men. I roll my eyes and sit at the empty desk. I brought some folders from home and bail bonds. I prop my feet up on the desk and flip through a few of them before I hear the door open. I don't even bother to look up. That's just the independent side of me kicking in again.
"Looks like someone's early," David laughs as he walks in with the group.
"Looks like someone's late," I quip back.
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Killian says.
I glare at him.
"Easy guys. Let's not fight on day one," David says.
Killian sighs and makes his way over to his desk, as do the others.
"Emma, you're being paired with Killian until you're ready to be on your own."
I groan. I have to be stuck with blue eyes? This couldn't get any worse. The door opens again and another man walks in.
"Will, thanks for joining us."
"Sorry boss. Got held up in traffic."
David sighs, but doesn't say anything else.
"Boss?" I question.
"Captain."
I raise my eyebrows. I'm not really surprised. He was always good at what he was doing.
"Well then, boss, what are we doing today?"
"You are doing paperwork, then patrol with Killian. Everyone else, you have your assignments. Get to work."
"Yes boss," they reply.
I hated paperwork more than anything, and that's my job for the day. Not a great first day. Oh well, at least it's an hour lunch break. I put my feet back on the ground and start on the paperwork. It's not hard, but there's a lot of it. My head is pounding by the time lunch comes around. Before I can even get out of the chair I find myself being hugged from behind. I freeze.
"Emma, I can't believe it's you!" Mary Margaret says.
I release a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
"Hey," I say shakily. "Way to catch a girl off guard."
She laughs. I had missed that sound. I look up and see Killian smirking at me. Okay, now I could punch him.
"What are you doing here?"
"I found an actual job."
"I'm so happy for you Emma! I've missed you!"
"I've missed you too."
We chit chat for several minutes before we part ways so we can all eat lunch.
"Where are you going, Swan?" Killian asks behind me.
"Granny's."
"Mind if I join?"
"I don't know what's stopping you."
"Can't we be friends?"
"Depends on you."
He follows behind me, but eventually finds his place by my side.
"What can I get for you today?" Ruby asks as we sit behind the counter.
"My normal," I say.
"Whatever she gets," Killian replies.
I roll my eyes for what seems to be the hundredth time already today. The sooner we can leave, the better. I avoid talking to him throughout the meal, focusing on my food instead.
"I don't bite, love."
I still don't say anything. Not my wisest choice, it only seems to intrigue him more.
"Come on love. If we're going to be working together, we might as well get to know each other."
"For one, you talk too much, for two, I don't talk, for three, if you want to live, don't cross me."
I stand up and walk out, leaving a tip for Ruby, or Red as I like to call her. Someone runs past me as soon as I hit the sidewalk.
"Police! Police!" I hear a woman shout.
"What happened?"
"He stole jewelry from my store."
"I'll get him."
I take off and notice Killian has just walked out of the diner.
"Swan!" he shouts, but I only pick up the pace.
The man in question is pretty far ahead of me, but luckily for me, I've always been good at running, even with asthma. I can hear Killian behind me, but I only focus on what's in front of me. I have to dodge a few cars, or they dodge me, not sure which, maybe both. I've closed in on him. I jump on him from behind, throwing us both to the ground. We both roll several times. I get up faster than he does, but he also grabs a knife. I can see Killian is behind us quite a way. He got caught by traffic I imagine. I turn my attention back to the man in front of me. I slowly move my hand to my gun, knowing he could throw the knife.
"Don't move!" he shouts at me.
I freeze my movements.
"Listen, we can put this all behind us. Just drop the knife."
"Drop the knife, drop the knife. Are you crazy?" He shouts at me.
"I won't hurt you, just drop the knife."
He lowers his hand a bit and I reach for the gun, quickly pulling it out of the holster, but it's a little late. I can't move out of the way fast enough and the knife gets caught in my right shoulder. I embrace the pain before the gun drops from my hand. He goes for it, but I jump into him, knocking him back. We struggle, he eventually getting the upper hand before I feel his weight being pulled off of me. Killian cuffs him and then looks down at me.
"Swan!" He bends down next me and pushes me down. "Stay down. God, I'm so sorry. I should've been there."
"It's fine Killian. I should've been quicker on the draw." I laugh. Maybe it could get worse.
He starts applying pressure around the wound.
"Officer down, I repeat, officer down. Send an ambulance to the corner of 44th and Broadway."
"Killian, I'm fine."
"No, stay down."
I grumble a bit, but stay down. It was really starting to hurt. His cell starts ringing.
"David. Emma's down. Knife to the shoulder. Yes, the paramedics are on the way. She's fine. We're fine. He's going to meet us at the hospital."
I groan at that.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine."
I can tell the blood loss is getting to me though.
"Stay awake Emma. Stay with me."
Last thing I see is are the lights of the ambulance before the world goes black.
