"Oh my god. This is all your fault!" Nate screams. "Who?! Who was it?!"
Derrick's eyes stare straight ahead as his pulse stops and the life leaves his body.
"Derrick!" Nate yells. "Dammit. If only you were alive for a second longer."
"If only. But oh well." A voice from the fog suddenly says. "It's a shame you had to kill Derrick. At least you didn't kill me. I shouldn't even let you have a chance to spare your family but out of the supposed kindness of my heart, I will. I suppose. Death pleasures me so here we go. It's been 8 hours, time to kill."
Nate vanishes to earth.
TWO WEEKS EARLIER
"Becca." Nate says her name as he smiles. "Hi."
"Hey, Nate." Becca says with a confused look on her face. "What are you doing here?"
"I was wondering if you had a few minutes to talk." Nate says.
"Actually, I'm kind of busy and have some company." She says. "But I suppose I could step out for a minute if it will be real quick."
"Okay." Nate says worriedly.
Becca shuts the door behind her and steps out on the front porch with Nate.
"What's wrong?" Becca asks.
"That's the thing," Nate says, "Everything is wrong."
"What do you mean?" Becca asks again.
"Everything is wrong, like nothing seems to be going right." Nate continues.
"Nate, I'm afraid I'm not following along." Becca snaps. "You have to elaborate a little bit more."
"Okay." Nate says, taking a deep breath. "Alright. So things have been crazy. For sure. The last couple months have been insane. With what my mother dying, the kidnapping, having the near death experience where you saved my life, Gabe dying, the breakup..."
"Yeah." Becca murmurs, looking down.
"Yeah." Nate repeats her, trying to look into her eyes to see her face but can't because her eyes are darting away. "It's been hard, especially having to go at it alone. Without you. You were there for me through some tough shit. I mean it. I mean what I say and I know that perhaps I got a little crazy and..."
"And what?" She asks, curiously.
"And I needed you." Nate says quietly. "But instead, you left me. We haven't talked since the kidnapping and before that it was nothing since the breakup or my mother's funeral briefly. I wanted to talk to you. I know you're busy so I'll just be quick."
Nate takes another deep breath.
"I am kinda going out on a limb here, but I was wondering if you would like to be my girlfriend again." Nate suggests looking at her.
She looks away before saying, "Nate. This is not the greatest time for that."
"Becca.."
"Nate, I am sorry that I left you at the bad time in your life but I can't just jump in right now, you see I'm kind of..."
"Kind of what?" Nate snaps, with tears in his eyes.
"..taken." Becca replies.
"What?" Nate gasps.
"Yeah," Becca continues, "Ya see, we have both been going through some tough shit and I needed someone to lean on. Someone was there for me and I let him in my life to help me up. Maybe you should find someone else to have someone there for you."
"Funny." Nate says as a tear escapes his eye. "In the same conversation, you apologize for not being there for me and then suggest me find someone to be there for me. Are you serious now?"
"Look, Nate." Becca tries to say, as Nate gets up and walks to the end of the porch to walk off, "It's not like that. I want to help you. I just can't be in a relationship with you right now, you know that."
Nate walks down the sidewalk.
"Nate, come on." Becca says.
Suddenly, the door opens and out comes a guy. Nate looks back, hearing the door and thinking Becca didn't care and went back inside. He can see he was wrong. It wasn't Becca.
"Tanner?" Nate says.
