Chapter Five— The Fault In Our Stars
Clay Jensen, I wondered how you would react as I had the tapes. I knew if anyone would want to do something it'd be you. We weren't crazy close or anything but you meant a lot to me, you still do and always will. I'm glad we met Clay Jensen you are one those people the ones you meet very rarely. You know the ones who never fail at surprising you, Clay you are surprising or as Hannah would call you, Helmet. Remember when she had to train you when you first started working at the Crestmont?"So, now if they ask if it's real butter what do you say?" Hannah asked Clay, Mr.Taylor had introduced you both to him as he was new.
"It's a butter-based product," He said and Hannah looked at you raising an eyebrow. As the two of you had a non-verbal conversation with your eyes Clay looked at you both lost.
"Yeah you're so right," Hannah said breaking the eye conversation then both of you looked at Clay.
"Good job on remembering but never forget to smile when you say it," You said.
"I know, terrifying but it sells the big lie. Oh and a little trade secret between (Y/n) and I since Mr.Taylor never comes on Fridays always watch at least one movie before leaving," Hannah explained basically telling him he had to as well.
"Here's a little secret maybe to help you out with the ladies if they're cute only put the butter on the top," You said and Clay furrowed his eyebrows at your statement which made you chuckle.
"It's so they have to come back for more during the movie. I've seen (Y/n) do it to this one guy so many times but she won't admit she's into him," Hannah said causing you to nudge her in the side as you rolled your eyes.
"Okay, but what's the whole point?" Clay asked and you rolled your eyes again at his awkwardness but it was in a way cute.
"So you can chat 'em up which (Y/n) doesn't do and it's frustrating," Hannah explained putting more napkins in the dispenser.
"Well chatting's not really my thing," Clay said making both you and Hannah look at each other and smile.
"I like him," Hannah said and you nodded in agreement looking at him.
"We're all gonna get along great just remember I have seniority with a year over both of you and Hannah has three weeks on you Clay. I trained her and now she's training you," You explained refilling the napkins.
"Which is insane because I literally just moved here two months ago and I have no idea what I'm doing," Hannah said.
"You moved here last year right?" Clay asked looking at you causing you to nod.
Some of our best memories happened there Clay I miss that so much. You are such a good friend I remember after I turned Jeff down despite him being determined you were as well.
"-alright sure I get it, Clay, he's your friend but he has a different girl on his arm every week. Why should I date a guy who probably sees me as replaceable?" You said looking at Clay who was walking you home after work.
"I get it with how you see him all the time it's hard to believe but he really likes you (Y/n)," Clay explained which made you furrow your eyebrows.
"We've never even talked how does he know me?" You asked.
"You don't remember. You two talked and danced at the winter formal. After that, he didn't stop talking about you. (Y/n) he really likes you and I swear he's a nice guy," Clay said making you sigh as he was persistent. The two of you were at your doorstep making you very relieved as you could finally get away from the pestering. "Promise me you'll think about it."
"Fine, I'll think about it just stop talking about it okay?" You said.
"Alright just please think about it."
Thanks, Clay I do appreciate you wanting me to consider Jeff, that night I did. Really thinking back I remembered that night and conversation with him. I learned things that night. I definitely learned from Hannah that little things are what lead to big things. Jeff and I's story I guess that's what you can call it is something I am going to get into but not yet not here. I remember much more than some school dance Clay, I remember you, at the crash.
"-hear me? Wake up! Oh my god! Hold on you two alright!" Opening your eyes slowly everything was distorted squeezing your hands to feel something you felt a hand but it was limp.
"Jeff?" You called out but you didn't get a response from him.
"Oh my god (Y/n) hold on I'm gonna get you out of there!" Clay yelled coming full circle you realized the situation you were in.
"No Clay help Jeff I'm fine!" You yelled.
"But-" He began.
"Dammit, Jensen I'm fine help him!" You yelled and he listened trying to get Jeff's door open but then the sound of the other driver in pain got his attention.
"Hold on! Hold on one sec! Help is coming!" Clay yelled as he began calling 911 but you kept calling out to Jeff shaking his arm hoping he would wake up.
"Jeff you gotta wake up," You said wiping some of the blood from his face, tears began to spill from yours as you begged. "Please!"
"He's gonna be okay," Clay said still trying to find a way to get Jeff out of the car but then you felt a searing pain in your left leg.
"Agh!" You screamed alarming Clay as you slowly began to fade from consciousness you felt Clay pulling you out of the car.
"No! Clay stop! Please no-!"
I have to thank you again, Clay, you saved my life well not completely but I'm still breathing because of you. I would've bled out if you hadn't come, alone and afraid that's a sad way to go outright? That night in the hospital though I had what I thought was a dream, it was of Jeff he was saying goodbye and at the time I didn't know why and before I woke up he told me he loved me one last time. Ever since you reminded me of that dance that's all I could think about for days in that hospital I just cried because no one had to tell me I just knew. Waking up in that hospital room and seeing my family and his family, their faces painted a very clear picture for me. I loved him and that night honestly I died in that car holding his hand. Clay all you did was pull out a girl who would later live with a void in her life no one would ever be able to fill. No one alive anyway.
