You woke up earlier than usual. It didn't take long for you to feel like something was wrong. You turned the other way to see if General Lafayette was there. To your surprise, he was nowhere to be found. Your chest tightened and you flung up. While your camp was split up to see which group had the traitor, there was a possibility that that person was in your camp.
You grabbed your coat and skirt and walked out of the cabin. You proceeded to change behind the tent. Since everyone in your cabin was still asleep, you assumed that you woke up around six a.m. or so. Little did you know, a certain someone was watching over you.
His mouth was wide open. John had never seen you out of your clothes, so he was in awe to see your body. His hands trembled, yearning to explore your beautiful body. He looked around, trying to see if anyone else saw you. In the act, he stepped on a twig and your head whipped around to find the source. You did not see him, but you did feel a presence. "Hello? Anyone there?" You called out. No one answered. Figures.
You walked back around the cabin, carrying your clothes you wore the day prior. They were drenched in sweat and smelled like it too. You decided not to go back into the tent, turning your heel and going in the direction towards the lake. The sun's beams gave a slight glisten to the steady water. You sat down on the damp grass from the morning's dew. The white shirt became engulfed into the lake and you rubbed it slightly, trying to at least make it eligible to wear later on.
After all of your clothes were soaked in water, you wrung them up on a branch next to the lake. You stayed at the side of the grass a little longer than needed. The water swayed very gently. You grazed your fingers across the waves, indulging in the piece and quiet that you almost barely ever got. "Just enjoy it, (Y/n)." You spoke to yourself. It was hell trying to calm down for once ever since this traitor came around. Everyone is paranoid and no one wants to stand watch at night.
Rustling was heard in the bushes nearby. You turned around and pulled out your knife. You slowly rose from the ground and inched further away from the noise. Finally, a panting soldier busted through the shrub and fell on his back, crawling away from the direction he came from. His head whipped around towards you and he just stared at you. Your eyes were wide, looking at the slit in his shoulder.
"Are you, ok?" You questioned. He stood up and held his hand to his arm. "Y-Yeah. However, I t-think I found the traitor." You gasped and jumped up. "Why aren't you telling Commander Lafayette?" He looked down at the ground. "Ms. (L/n), I found Marquis De Lafayette in critical condition about ten minutes ago. You grew furious.
"And you didn't tell anyone!?" He looked at you, confused. "Everyone is asleep, remember? You and I are the only ones awake at the moment. Besides." He stood in attention and handed you a note. You grabbed it from him and read it, examining every word on the page.
To whoever finds this note,
I, Marquis De Lafayette, am in very poor condition. Please sent help for me. While I am in this state, I shall appoint (Y/n) (L/n) to be in charge of my troop. However, I want my men to be alert of her decisions. She may be wise, but she can also be klutzy. Do not let her do anything that will diminish the camp. I wish for her to have a strong legacy, so don't let her do something dull-witted.
You have my thanks, Lafayette.
Your hands shook as you gripped the note close to your chest. "Where is Lafayette?" You asked. He signaled you to follow him and led you into the woods. It felt like a long walk. So long, that you started to get worried. 'What if he is lying? What if he is the traitor?' You were shaking in your boots. The snapping of twigs and leafs were all that was heard. Occasionally, you would see a squirrel or a birds nest, but the forest you and this anonymous soldier were walking through was very deserted.
You two reached your destination. Your hands flew up to your mouth as you realized the scene that was in front of you. Your commanding officer was tied to a tree with huge cuts on his shoulders, chest, face, and gashes in his legs. You bent down and laid your fingers on his neck. He still had a pulse. "H-How? How in the world is he still alive?" You stuttered. You shook your head and pulled out your knife again. It sliced through the rope holding him to the tree.
You grabbed his arm and slung it over your shoulder. You commanded the other soldier to do so with his other arm. The two of you slumped him back to camp and woke up all the nurses and medics. They took Lafayette from you and the soldier and you sighed. "I hope he survives..." You muttered. "I highly doubt it. He probably has infections all over at this point." You turned your heel, crossing your arms and growing deep in thought. "You said you found the traitor, did you not? Please take me to them." He nodded and directed you to a tent.
A man was laying on a sleeping bag, clearly unconscious. "Did you knock this man out?" You interrogated. "Yes, ma'am. He was standing in front of the body when I found it." You bent down and studied the so-called culprit. It turned out to be,
"Hercules!?" You shouted. He flung up and noticed he was in your presence. "W-Where am I?" Your arms latched onto his neck and you gave him a warm hug. The soldier was very confused. "Ms. (L/n), this man may be the enemy and you're hugging him?" You stood up and the soldier became stiff.
"This man is not the culprit. Hercules Mulligan is my closest friend and he would never hurt his fellow patriots. Now, if you please, go check on Commander Lafayette." He nodded and stumbled out of the tent.
"Why are you here? You should be at the other camp with General Washington!" You yelled. "I have important news to tell you." You tilted your head. "What is it?"
"Laurens has to be the traitor."
