Murdoch was lying on the couch one night, he couldn't stop thinking of his and Gillies conversation earlier , he never would have known that Gillies' father had abused his mother then without warning he remembered four words : beautiful lie, painful truth.

A young boy sat on the couch as he watched his parents bicker about the latest subject in school that the boy had gotten wrong

' not that it happened often ' Murdoch thought as Gillies walked back into the house

" Mary we don't have enough room for that in our work schedule!" The boys father exclaimed suddenly, his mother stood up from her chair " we can and will make it work !" She stated angrily

Gillies smiled as he saw the detective, he crawled on top of him " hi sweetheart." Murdoch said , Gillies kissed his cheek " hi !" Gillies replied as he curled up on top of Murdoch's chest

The parents had continued the argument, each word their voices got louder and louder, the young boy had went into the kitchen

Murdoch strokes Gillies back soothingly, gillies knew that Murdoch hadn't noticed but he felt Murdoch get tense " is something wrong sweetheart? You're tense." Gillies asked , he felt Murdoch's head shake

Smack ! The boy's father had just smacked his mother across the face , clank! The woman fell to the floor with a clank of her shoes hitting the floor " I'm sick of you talking back to me ! " the man exclaimed, the woman was trying to get up , her husband stepped on her leg so she was unable to " and I'M sick of YOU treating me like a PRINCESS! I can stand up to you if I WANT!"

" I'm fine sweetheart. Just fine. " Murdoch reassured calmly, although deep down he knew he wasn't ....

Bang ! A gunshot was Hurd from the living room, the boy ran back into the living room, his father was standing over top of his mother with a gun , smoke was still visible " da-" the boy started, his father turned on him , the gun pointing at him now " go upstairs now William!" The father said as he took another swig of his beer , yes . Beer.

" did you know my father was an alcoholic?" Murdoch asked curiously, gillies hummed in response " I didn't know that." Gillies replied softly

" how many drinks have you had dad ?!" The boy, William, asked he wasn't stupid, he was 13 years old , he knew his father was an alcoholic but he also knew his father had just killed "  doesn't matter to you William Murdoch, get in bed NOW !" Mr.Murdoch insisted harshly as he finished his glass of beer, Murdoch ran upstairs to his room

Gillies felt something wet touch his hand , he looked up at Murdoch to see Murdoch silently crying, " what's wrong William? " Gillies asked , worriedly

" remember this William: life is a beautiful lie , death is a painful truth." His mother once told him and now she was gone. That was the night he , William Murdoch decided that he would become a Detective and stop people like his father. He would become Detective William Murdoch of station house number four, nothing could stop him . Not even his father.

" my father killed my mother James. You and me are more alike than we know. " Murdoch commented, Gillies nodded understandingly , he whipped away Murdoch's tears " life's a beautiful lie, deaths a painful truth ." Murdoch stated as gillies placed his lips over his own. Those words never failed Murdoch, one . Bit.
