It wasn't what happened, it's what followed - Gillies/Murdoch story

University feild trip

Murdoch was sitting in his office when a commotion from outside his office distracted him " sir , there's a university physics class here sir , they are on a field trip here for the day and I believe it's James' class ..." George said as he opened the door , Murdoch looked confused " field trip ?" He asked as he followed George out of his office " yes indeed sir , the inspector wants you to show them around the station , and me to follow " George said as they approached the inspector who was talking to the teacher " - yes , our students are very excited for this trip !" The teacher said , nodding her head " well our best detective and his Constable will show you all around the station, as well as the city morgue , I believe that he's working on a case as we speak so your class will see how Detective's jobs work ." The inspector said, Murdoch cleared his throats from behind him " sir , what is this about ?" Murdoch asked, James looked over at him as he spoke , so did Robert " you will be showing the class from Toronto university around the station and the morgue , as well as work on your case " Inspector Brackenreid reported , Murdoch and George nodded " I sir ." George said as Murdoch began to lead the way to the inspectors office .

~ during the trip ~

" this is my office , here is where I investigate crimes and on my free time I invent things ." Murdoch said as they walked past his office " any questions?" The teacher, Mrs. Dawn asked as they did so " how many hours do you spend on average here Detective Murdoch?" A girl asked , her name was Isabella, Murdoch and George asked everyone their names before they started " I get up at  5:00 then have to be here by 6:00 and I stay until dinner but sometimes longer if need be " murdoch replied as they entered the hallway leading to the jail cells " so that's 13 hours ." Robert said , Murdoch nodded " yes it is Mr.Perry " Murdoch said dryly as they entered the jail cells " so this is station house number four's jail cells but I have some questioning to do while we're here so please bear with me " Murdoch said , there was murmurs of ' okay ' throughout the group of students " ah, mr. Carl , glad to see you're awake ." Murdoch commented as he stopped outside a cell " detective Murdoch, I see you have guests , how can I help you ?" Mr. Jordan Carl asked from the inside of the cell, " yes actually, why did you kill Mr.Jefferson the night of his wedding ?" Murdoch asked , George crossed his arms and gave the class a wink as in ' he's good at this , won't be long ' type wink " because he was in the way of my happiness and besides, I was payed to do it as you know " Carl said , Murdoch scoffed " yes I know you were payed to , now who payed you ?" Murdoch asked , Carl shook his head with a laugh " you really are not clever , Miss.Veronica was right, you aren't clever at all ." He replied, the detectives mind rang with

" he said you weren't very clever ...... "

" 16 teenage Veronica Bowden payed you ?" Murdoch asked , he knew Gillies was smirking from where he stood " yes , she said that the man who kidnapped her when she was young said that you weren't very clever and boy was she right " Carl continued, Murdoch felt his temper go up , he had been interrogating Mr.Carl for weeks and only now he got answers , he was angry " now you tell me who?! Miss.Bowden could have payed many more in these past twelve weeks !" Murdoch replied , anger thick in his voice " sir ...." George warned , Murdoch inhaled " do you know who kidnapped her Detective?" Carl asked , everyone held their breath at the confrontation " James Gillies ." Murdoch said bitterly, giving Gillies a death glare , Gillies laughed " indeed I did detective, she was a sweetheart but don't forget I helped you with her a few months ago." Gillies said , Murdoch shoved Gillies into the wall " WILLIAM!" Julia exclaimed from behind the detective, George pulled the detective back " j-Julia ?" Murdoch asked , letting go of Gillies Sleeve " let Mr.Gillies go, he didn't do it , Mr.Carl did, you know that . " Julia explained, visibly calming Murdoch down , the class knew of Gillies' crime history so they weren't surprised by Murdoch' outburst " Julia, how nice to see you again " gillies said , walking right past Murdoch and pulling Julia into a hug " Get off Mr.Gillies , now ." Julia said , sternly, he obeyed , this was going to be a long day ......

~ later on that night, at Murdoch's ~

Murdoch was lying on the couch, his eyes closed , Julia and Gillies had just walked in the house " he didn't mean to have an outburst James . He's just stressed " Julia said as they walked into the living room, gillies laughed " I know Julia, I wasn't upset about it.  I knew Jorden , I hated him " gillies said but bitterly about Jordan Carl " I'm sorry, both of you." Murdoch said softly  without opening his eyes , Gillies walked over and kissed him " I know . It's okay . " gillies said reassuringly as he pulled away , Murdoch opened his eyes and pulled Gillies close , Gillies fell onto the detective's chest in doing so " there's no need to apologize William, it was expected " Julia said calmly as she began to unpin her up-do " thank you both for understanding...." Murdoch replied as he looked out the window to a busying Toronto street .
