*Scott's Pov.*
I anxiously tapped my foot on the floor of Todd's pickup truck. I couldn't seem to redirect any of my nervous energy somewhere else and I could feel Todd's gaze shift from the road to me to my foot and back to the road.
"Dude!" he finally shouted.
"I'm sorry!" I replied. "What could have happened that they had to call someone from her emergency contacts?" I couldn't help but assume the worst and I was freaking out.
"Relax, Scott, we're gonna get there and everything is going to be alright," Toddy said. The car ride remained silent and the air between us was filled with urgency.
Yes, Kristen and I had just broken up but that didn't mean I didn't still care about her. She was still my friend and if anything were to happen to her I would be so torn up.
Finally we pulled to a halt in front of the hospital emergency room and I practically ripped off my seat belt. I ran through the sliding doors and up to the receptionist counter.
"Hi, um I'm here about Kristen Mcatee," I rushed.
"I'm sorry sir but I can't release any information to you at this time," the lady said.
"But I was called by one of your nurses. I'm an emergency contact," I replied.
"I'm sorry sir but I can't release any information regarding this particular patient unless you are a family member." The woman continued to type away nonchalantly and I sighed in frustration. Suddenly an idea came to me and looked back at the woman.
"I'm her fiancé," I lied. The woman paused and looked up at me, one eyebrow raised in suspicion.
"Really?" she questioned. I just nodded quickly and she picked up her phone. "I have Ms. Mcatee's fiancé here to speak with a doctor. Yes. Of course," the woman nodded and hung up the phone. She continued to print something off of her computer and handed it to me. "This is your badge, wear it at all times. The place you're looking for is down the hall and to the left. Best of luck." I nodded once more and thanked her before running off in the direction she showed me.
"Excuse me, sir, no running in the halls," a man in a white coat said. He stopped me and saw my badge. "If you keep running that way you'll miss your left turn," he smiled. I looked at him.
"I'm looking for my friend. I was called about an hour ago and I drove from across town to get here and I just really need to know if she's alright and I'm-"
"Whoa, slow down. Follow me and I'll show you right where you need to go," the man, whom I assumed was a doctor led me towards a pair of double doors and down a hallway of white and gray entrances. Every turn looked the same and I felt more and more lost with every step. I continued to follow the doctor until we reached another desk. "Here we are, this is nurse Lydia. She should take fine care of you and your friend," the man smiled and gestured to a woman standing behind the white marbled counter.
"Hi, what can I help you with?" the nurse asked kindly.
"My name is Scott Sire and I was called about Kristen Mcatee," I said.
"Alright, let's see," the nurse typed way at the keyboard in front of her and them smiled. "Well, it looks like she's in the process of being discharged from our ER. Would like to see her?" All I could do was nod. As we walked, I couldn't help but wonder why I was called.
"It doesn't seem like a major emergency if she's being discharged so quickly so why was I called?" I asked.
"Oh its standard procedure here. If a patient comes in alone and we're able to ID them we usually call the first contact on their emergency list. I apologize for the scare," she said. "Here we are. I'll be right up the hall from here if you need anything," the nurse smiled cheerfully before walking away.
