Book trailers / teasers is a new tool on a writer's inventory.
Up to this day we used to talk about the book's cover in order to lure the reader to read it. Today a lot of readers are searching for their next book on line and most of the writers are using social media to promote their work.
A photograph of the book's cover and a catch phrase from the book or a review is the most common way to spread the word about a book. There are several programs online that you can use and create a book cover for free or an advertisment.
Some writers are using book trailers as an extra step. There are a lot of programs that you can use to create a book trailer. If you check your software on your pc you will find a programm allready installed that will help you create a small trailer that can create a slide show about your book.
If you want to go further than that there are a lot of programs that can help you create a video trailer. Since most of us can't create a video starting from a black screen, there are free templates that you can search on line and after the proper adjustments they can be a perfect match for your trailer. If you have no previous experience on that, embrace yourself. It's harder than it looks and "how to ..." videos on youtube will save you from endless mistakes and furstration.
I use Sony Vegas Pro. Once you get used to it, it's quite simple and there are plenty of videos to guide to on how to do things using it, not to mention that most free templates are designed on Sony Vegas Pro for using them there. So if you are tired of writing and editing and you want to have some fun with your book, give it a try! It may be a complete disaster but don't give up. If things still look ugly, ask for help. I bet a friend of yours is having fun editing videos and uploading them on youtube.
On the other hand you can be perfectly fine without any book trailer.
