Day 1.

I hate math, and I hate tests. And guess how my lovely day started... A math test. Absolutely wonderful.

"Sadie!" My friend, Lilly, whispered frantically.

"If your asking me about question nine, I don't have an answer."

"It's not that, it's better! Or worse... I duuno... Just look!" She pointed out the classroom window.

"What the hell is that?"

"I... I don't know..." Lilly gave me a anxious look.

"The guy's limping, and I think he's bleeding... We should get some help."

"TEACHER! I see a guy limping outside! He's bleeding too! I think he needs help!" Lilly shouted, her voice sounding squeaky.

The rest of the class looked out the window.

"Don't be ridiculou-" our teacher started. The speakerphone made an obnoxious noise and the principle started talking.

"Ahem... Excuse the interruption but everyone must head towards the gym, this is an emergency, I repeat, all grades must head towards the gym, thank you." Everyone looked at each other, clearly confused.

Everyone stood up, I grabbed Lilly's hand, I don't want to loose her in the stampede of preteens and teens.

"I suspect that guy on the field is up to something..." I murmur.

"Probably..." She gave me a nervous look. Fear shone in her eyes.

"Oh c'mon! Don't be scared, you wimp!" I taunted her.

"Sadie, now's not the time! The principle said it's a emergency."

She's right, now's not the time for jokes.

We all march down to the gym and sit down on the floor.

We see guys in weird white suits, scientists, I guess. But, why are they here? One of them speaks up.

"The town of Springmond is currently under a state of emergency."

A sudden buzz of conversation starts among the students.

"Corpses have started rising and walking. If you get bitten by one you die and rise again as one of them." He continues.

I glance at Lilly, her green eyes are wide and shining.

"We have not yet discovered a cure for this but scientists are researching and are looking for a solution. We might not find it for several months, so stay at home or here and avoid the 'walkers' at all costs."

I suddenly feel the courage to speak up.

"You're joking, that's impossible!" I shout.

"I'm sorry to say it's true. We believe that parasites have taken over their brains and are controlling them even after death."

"That's bull crap!" I yell, despite the fact that I believe what they're saying.

"What about our families?" Lilly says shyly.

"You may speak to them by phone after all questions are answered.

Seven questions later, Lilly and I are in line to call our parents. I stand awkwardly, squished in between a few other people in my class. The person in front of me is finished talking. I step forward. I dial my moms number at top speed. And almost instantly, she picks up.

"Sadie! Are you okay?" My mom asks, sounding terrified.

"Yeah, I'm in the gym with the rest of the school, it's... I don't know... Scary..." I start tearing up for no reason.

"Honey, go home, I will go home too, dad will go home as well, we'll be together, everything will be alright." Her reassurance makes me even more worried. Hot tears run down my cheeks.

"Mommy, I'm scared!"

"I know, baby, I kno-"

Suddenly she screams and I hear some gurgling noises.

"MOMMY!" I scream into the phone.

"GO HOME! PACK YOUR BAGS! I LOVE YO-"

The phone call ends and I'm on the floor. Screaming and bawling. Lilly runs up to me and hugs me.

"It's ok, it's ok, we're all here, we're together."

It's 7pm and most of the half the school left with their parents. No one came for me. No one came for Lilly. My sadness turned into anger. I was the first and only person to loose anyone. I storm up to a guard, blocking the exit.

"Take me home." I say weakly.

"Sorry, I'm not allowed."

"Take me home." I say firmly this time.

"No."

I couldn't handle the anger and sadness building up inside me. I launch myself at him. Kicking and scratching and hitting until Lilly and another guard pulls me off. He looks at me, outraged.

"Jimmy, take the girls home, damn it!"

"We're not allowed, Norman!"

"Do it."

"What if she attacks me?" He glares at me.

"She won't if you take her home."

"Fine."

I grab my schoolbag, emptied from any actual work. Lilly takes her stuff too.

"Where are you going?" I ask her.

"With you."

"Okay than." I reply, releasing a sigh of relief.

Home was worse.
