Standing on the edge of the roof of an eight-story building was Spencer Mitchell, Ben Starsky's partner of the Los Angeles Police Department. Ben stood several feet back from his unstable partner trying to convince him not to jump, he'd been trying for hours and nothing was working, it was getting worse.

"Spence please step away from the edge, we.... we can talk, you don't need to end it like this, I can help," explained Ben nervously as he moved a bit closer.

Spencer turned and pointed his gun to Starsky, with tears pouring down his face and the gun shaking violently in his hand.

"Spence, I need you to come away from the edge; I can help you though this," Ben said calmly as he slowly inched toward him.

Spence grasped his head and shook it,

"You can't help me out of this one... It's too late," cried Spencer, "I'm sorry Ben but I'm done."

Ben was tearing up; he knew all too well that his mind was made up.

"Spence, don't do this... please,"  pleaded Ben as he stepped forward a bit.

"Spence..." gasped Ben.

"I'm so sorry partner," cried Spence as he took a step over the edge.

Ben sat up fast, dripping with sweat to the sound of his alarm clock. He hit the snooze button and looked at his wife Jane lying in bed beside him. She was a bit startled.

"Was it Spence again?" she asked with concern.

He nodded in agreement and ran his hands through his sweat-soaked hair.

"Yeah.... It would have been five years ago today," replied Ben as he got out of bed, "feels like it happened yesterday and maybe that's why I find it hard to have partners these days."

Jane looked at him with worry,

"You accepted Wolf's partnership pretty fast, was there a reason for that?" asked Jane as she got dressed.

After he had a shower and got dressed, Ben walked into the kitchen adjusting the gun holster on his shoulders.

He sat down and his three boys came running in with Jane walking behind. Ben was very much the family man, marrying Jane at twenty six and having three boys; his eldest, Martin was ten, Jak was nine and Tyler was eight.

They all sat at the kitchen table and Ben continued his conversation with Jane.

"Wolf's history... is just like mine, he lost his partner too but in the line of duty. He and his partner were at a drug bust; Wolf got shot in the back of head, his partner carried him to safety and was shot numerous times in the back," replied Ben, "And I'd be dead if it weren't for him."

Half an hour later Ben was standing outside, he hugged his kids and kissed Jane before getting in the car and driving off to pick up Wolf. As Jane hugged him Ben could tell she was worried.

"Ben, please be careful," she said with worry.

Ben has been with Wolf for two years and they've been through a lot, Wolf gained Ben's trust when he saved his ass on their first case together. Ben arrived at Wolf's house to pick him up; his wife Jackie answered the door.

"Hey Starsky, he'll be down in a minute he had a situation with the plumbing in the bathroom," explained Jackie.

Ben walked in and he immediately had Wolf's nine-year-old son Braydon cuddling his leg.

"Hey there Braydon, where's your dad?" asked Ben as he tried to walk in further with Braydon clinging to his leg.

Wolf came down stairs shirtless looking around the place for a shirt.
