Chapter 11 "We are just friends"

Katelyn's POV

"Let's go!" I shouted to Audrey as I plopped my big box on her table,
"What do you have for me?" She inquired.
"I've got a bunch of stuff! Black lights, glow in the dark nail polish and body paint, neon streamers, balloons, and some other stuff."
"Sounds fun! I'll go set up the soundtrack on the speakers if you start unpacking?"
"Gotcha!" As I said this I started unloading and watched Audrey walk towards the living room where the main speaker was set up. Luckily she had a good speaker system, plug it up in one place, and it bluetooths to the other three speakers set up in different spots. We decided two would go to the living room, one to the dining room, and one to the tv room with the fireplace.

I heard the first song, "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots, start playing when Audrey walked back into the dining room.
"Do we have enough music?"
"Pff. Please! I have eleven hours of music on that phone, Disney and Davie's songs not included. I've set up an eight hour playlist just for this party. I've got everything from Ke$ha's 'Die Young' to Fall Out Boy's 'Uma Thurman'. "
"Awesome! It's 4:30 now, party starts in an hour and a half. Which means we have an hour to set up decorations and fifteen minutes to set out the food and make final touches. People might start getting here early so we have to be prepared. We don't want people walking in on us while we're half decorated! That would be ter-"
"Katelyn!" Audrey interrupted,
"Calm. Down." She stated as she grabbed my hands and held them tight, "Breathe." She said. I took a deep breath and she nodded. Then, we started to decorate.

The house looked amazing; Audrey decorated with the streamers and balloons while I changed out all of the light bulbs in the living room, and dimmed the rest, with black lights that made bright colors glow after dark. Audrey pulled a month's worth of food out of her fridge and pantry: brownies, cupcakes, cheese and meat trays, fruit and veggie trays, chips, and a huge bowl of candies. She had everything!
"Tha-Tha-That's a lot of foooood!" I drooled, reaching for the sweet deliciousness that was a Hershey's chocolate bar.
"AH AH!" Audrey shouted and slapped my hand.
"Ouch! What was that for?" I whined.
"Not until the party starts!" She replied.
"Fine!" I gave a sigh and walked away to go find my bag somewhere in Audrey's room, "I'm going to change."
"I'll come too, I need to put on my party clothes!" She cheered, following me upstairs.

Audrey's POV

It was around 6:30 before people started showing up. It was mainly the girls and boys basketball team. I walk over to where the food was to see Riley stuffing her face with nachos.

"Enjoying ourselves are we?" I poked her.
"I just really like nachos," Riley whined.
"I had to stop Katelyn from trying to eat all of the chocolate. Speaking of which," I glanced around, "I should probably find her."
Riley raised her eyebrow and looked at me.
"What?" I asked her.
"Oh nothing! Just thinking," She said with a slight smile.
"Riley, what are you thinking?" I asked again.
She waited a bit before answering, "It's nothing... really. I was just think about how you are spending so much time with Katelyn and all. You two seem very close."

I gulped. 'Does Riley know? How could she know? Is it that obvious?'

"Ah ha! I knew it!" She almost screamed. "There is something going on between you two!"
"Shh! Quiet down before someone hears you!" I said in a panicked voice. "And no, there is nothing going on between us. We are just friends"
I'm basically lying through my teeth. 'Just friends' don't kiss each other. I screamed internally.
Riley could see right through my lie though. She poked me in the chest.
"You're lying and you know it," She said very pointedly.
I sighed and ran my hand through my hair, "Okay fine, but it wasn't a complete lie. We're not together."
Riley's eyes lit up, "But you still have feelings for her and so does she!"
I laughed nervously.
"Why haven't you asked each other out yet?" She inquired.
"Well, we didn't want to rush anything, and I guess I don't have the nerve to."
"You totally should. Like tonight," Riley gasped, "Wouldn't it be amazing to start the New Year off with a girlfriend! You need to ask her out tonight!"
I groaned, "But that's sooo cliche."
"But also romantic," She rebutted.
"Ugh, fine. I have question. How did you know about us?" I asked curiously.
"Oh, I have my ways. I'm basically a love expert," She winked at me before turning around. "Plus, you two fawn over each other. It'd have to be an idiot not to notice."

I make my way into the living room as "Victorious" by Panic! At the Disco starts to play. I see Katelyn sitting on the couch talking to Jasmine.
"Oh! I love this song!" Jasmine says excitedly.
"Yeah, it's a good song," Katelyn nods in agreement.
"Hey guys," I greet them, "Can I join you two?"
Well duh!" Katelyn said sarcastically.
"Dance party!" Jasmine shouts all of a sudden.
"Woo!"
"Yeah!"
I looked over at Katelyn and offered her my hand.
"Shall we dance?" I asked.
"We shall," She replied with a teasing glint in her eyes.
I chuckled as everyone joined in the living room to dance. This went on for about an hour or two before people started tiring out. All of the boys left around 10:30, so that left us girls. Everyone was sitting on and around the couch watching The Nightmare on Elmstreet. Everyone had decided on a horror movie, so here we are. Katelyn was sitting right beside me, our hands intertwined underneath the blanket. Every now and then a couple of girls would jump or squeal. There was one part in the movie that made Katelyn jump and let out a small whine. She put her head in the crook of my neck. I gave her hand a small squeeze.
"Don't be a baby; it's just a movie," I whispered in her ear. Katelyn gave a huff of annoyance.

It was about 11:35 before the movie ended. Katelyn got up and stretched. I subconsciously was checking her out. Riley must have noticed because she came up to me and whispered in my ear, "It's now or never, Romeo. Go and get your girl."

Katelyn's POV

I stretched out my arms and legs and reached up, then down to touch my toes. I saw Riley whisper something to Audrey but ignored it. Audrey hesitantly walked over to me and played with her basketball bracelet she wears on special occasions.
"Can I talk to you?" She asked, this aroused a terrible feeling in my stomach; my thoughts were scarce in my mind. I subconsciously bobbed my head and followed her into the next room. I noticed she had something in the pocket of her pajama pants.
"If this is a prank... I will hit you if I'm scared again for the next week."
"It isn't a prank. I promise." She assured, I still followed her. Audrey pulled me by the wrist into her small downstairs bathroom.
"Uh. I uh, I don't know how to do this." Her soft voice trailed off. I watched dumbfounded as my best friend got down on the bathroom floor and said to me,
"Katelyn Underwood, will you be my girlfriend?" As she pulled out a cherry ring pop and offered it to me.
"Audrey, I..." I couldn't find the words.
"Oh, I-I'm sorry, I rushed into it-"
"No, Audrey, I was about to ask you the same thing." I cut her off as I pulled her favorite flavor, blue raspberry, of ring pop out of my own pocket.
"Katelyn..." She lost words; after a few seconds I offered her the ring agin. This time, she took it and handed me mine. After taking a few licks at our rings we came out of the bathroom and into the living room where the tv was streaming the party from NYC. After a few songs, and a lot of dancing and singing, we started the countdown.

"1" We all shouted this together and when the ball dropped Audrey leaned over and kissed me, no one saw-we were in the back of the room-but it was...magical.
