Chapter 18
We arrived at Aodhan’s cousins house (mansion) in no time at all. They didn’t seem to live far, but that could because I never wanted the car journey with Aodhan to end.
It seemed like a lot of people were there already; judging by the amount of cars queued up along the little road in the middle of nowhere where they lived. We found a parking space and walked to the mansion together, not waiting for the others, my arm in Aodhan’s. It felt natural.
As soon as we got closer to the large wooden doors my stomach started doing somersaults inside of me. Aodhan noticed my discomfort and smiled at me.
“Don’t worry. You have nothing to be nervous about.” He smiled.
“What if they don’t like me? I want them to like me.” I said.
“They will love you, I’m sure of it.” He grinned.
I nodded and we walked through the large doors to be greeted by an elderly man holding a clipboard.
“Name?” he asked.
“Aodhan Tyler and guest.” Aodhan said politely.
The elderly man looked at his clipboard and ticked off Aodhan’s name.
“Good evening Mr Tyler, if you would like to make your way into the basement area where the party will be held tonight.” The elderly man, who I’m now presuming was the butler, smiled.
“Thank you.” Aodhan smiled.
He led me down a flight of stairs and through a glass door to a party that one could only imagine. The dance floor was amazingly huge and people were already making good use of the space. There was a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling and it let out a faint glow. The only other sources of light were the lanterns peppered around the huge room. Tables with crystal white table clothes and various Halloween decorations were situated around the mass space of the dance floor, and there was a huge buffet table in one corner of the room with a big glass bowl of red punch which I think was meant to look like blood. The DJ was at another corner of the room on the decks, playing some Halloween classics like Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
The costumes that some people wore were phenomenal. I looked down at my costume and seemed even more insignificant.
“Branna, you look beautiful.” Aodhan said softly, obviously noticing my worries.
I smiled half-heartedly and we walked over to a boy dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow.
“Branna, this is my cousin Daithi. Daithi, this is Branna.” Aodhan introduced us politely.
Daithi held out his hand for me to shake which I did gladly. It’s not every day that you meet a real-life Johnny Depp look-alike.
“Before you ask, Daithi means swiftness or nimbleness. I am very fast. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He winked at me.
“The pleasure is all mine.” I laughed.
“So, what’s your power?” he asked.
“Actually, Daithi, this is the girl I was talking about.” Aodhan said.
“Can it be? Well, you are the most charming person I have ever met considering you have this…” he looked around dramatically and leaned in closer to my ear, “… dark magic.” He stage whispered.
