Chapter Nineteen: The Unfortunate Timing..

   By the time Sonic's foot cast was due to be removed Rouge was also due for her final baby scan. Once the newly forty-four year old white bat had learnt this she urged the forty year old blue hedgehog to get his cast removed a the same time so that both he and Shadow would be around for the baby scan. Though Sonic knew he could just as easily go to a regular hospital and get his cast removed along with his physiotherapy he couldn't pass up the chance to see the new scans with his own eyes. This particular scan was going to reveal whether the baby was going to be a bat like Rouge or an echidna like Knuckles, it would have also been able to show what gender the baby was going to be but the couple wanted to wait until the birth to settle their bet on the baby's guardian.

There was benefits to dating a G.U.N special agent, it meant that he could also have access to the free healthcare that they offered to Shadow, not that he ever seemed to need it. The natural levels of Chaos energy in his body meant that he never got sick and any injuries healed at a much faster rate than normal. It didn't take much coaxing to persuade Shadow to take him into G.U.N's headquarters on the outskirts of Empire City. It was faster and more advanced than seeing a regular doctor in a hospital anyway.

"Shad, what time do we have to be in the medical bay by?" Sonic asked as he squirmed a little on the couch, trying to resist the urge to scratch as the skin under his cast had been itching him for the last week. He knew that it was just a phantom itch, they had been coming and going since the cast had been on, but that didn't make it any less uncomfortable and irritating. He figured it was just getting to him more this time because of his desperate desire for the cast to be finally off.

"You still have another hour.." Shadow murmured before his black brow knitted into a scowl as he straightened from retrieving Sonic's red and white hitops from the front door where they had long since been abandoned by their blue-quilled owner. "And stop scratching! That thing will be off soon enough.." He added sternly as he caught the middle-aged blue hedgehog trying to scratch the ankle covered in plaster of Anais cast, yet again. This was the third time he had caught him doing this today.

"Sorry, it's hard to quit." Sonic replied with a momentary dip of his ears.

"Hmh, sounds like you could use a distraction." The black and red hedgehog stated in a gentle voice as he plopped down into the seat next to his middle-aged boyfriend. Sonic's green eyes immediately narrowed towards the teenage-looking male hedgehog next to him.

"Just what are you offering?" He purred in a suddenly husky tone, shifting into a more alluring position and throwing Shadow his best seductive gaze.

"What?" The black hedgehog blinked, his red eyes blinking in confusion as Sonic edged a bit closer to him.

"Don't play coy, babe.." Sonic murmured breathlessly slipping his arms around the tapered black-furred waist and pulled the taut, lean-muscled body of his boyfriend closer as he purred.

"Sonic.." The black hedgehog with red stripes gripped the peach tanned shoulders of the forty year old hedgehog and was resisting his pull. "D-Did you just call me babe?" Shadow's black and red eye-ridges quirked in surprise and disbelief. His cobalt blue boyfriend had never given him any kind of pet name before and he had no idea whether or not he was comfortable with it. It had only been a few weeks since their first official date and it seemed that Sonic was far more comfortable with him while Shadow was still cautious and reserved. They had shared a couple more tentative dates since their secluded twilight picnic but the reluctant black hedgehog still had them hovering around first base.

"Mhm.. C'mere." Sonic purred lowly with a throaty growl, his gloved fingers slipping down the small of Shadow's back, his knuckles grazing the soft pointed back quills of his black-furred boyfriend. He grinned playfully as Shadow's scarlet eyes widened in shock when those white gloved fingers suddenly seized his well-toned hips, dangerously close to his rear and tail.
