Waiting

Sirens. Flashing lights. EMTs. After giving Bella mouth to mouth and calling 911, things escalated dramatically. Bella was swooped from Julian's arms, although reunited quickly in the back of the ambulance. They raced through the freeway to the nearest hospital. Julian ran along side her bed, holding her blackening hand, until he was told to wait.

Wait.

Wait.

How can you wait when the one person you have left in your life is possibly dying? He didn't even know what happened. A million scenarios raced through his head as he thought of all the "what ifs". He should have taken her to the doctor. Then she would have been okay.

This was his fault.

Julian began sobbing into his hands as he fell into the cold chair. If she died, it would be his fault. He wouldn't be able to cope. He was the one person Bella had ever trusted and loved, and he let her down. He disappointed her.

A nurse popped her head out the swinging doors.

"Miles J. Spencer?" She asked, scanning the room. Julian immediately stood. The nurse beaconed him back into a small office where a doctor waited.

"Spencer?" He asked. Julian nodded, taking a seat. "Does Bella have any immediate family?" He asked. Julian shook his head.

"No, not at all sir. They're possibly living, but they were very abusive to Bella and she hasn't contacted them in years," he said quietly. The doctor nodded. "I'm all she's got," he said, looking at his feet.

"You see, Bella went untreated for strep throat, which can be extremely dangerous," he said in a monotone voice.

"Is she gonna be okay?" Julian asked frantically. The doctor sighed.

"That's what I needed to talk to you about, Miles," he said. Julian looked up. "Bella's very lucky you called when you did, her lungs had just began to fail before we got her on life support. But, she's gone sepsis," he said quietly. Julian looked up, panicked. "We can save her life if we amputate her hands, but she's not awake to make the decision," Julian's heart fell.

Here he was, an amputee who had gone through hell. He wouldn't wish what he had gone through on anyone, and yet, here he was. The rest of Bella's life was in his hands. Go figure.

"And there are no other options?" He asked. The doctor shook his head.

"Unfortunately, no," he said solemnly. "It's her only chance of living. We just need your approval. The longer we wait, the more we'll have to amputate."

Julian gulped. "Then what are we waiting for?" He asked. The doctor nodded, standing. "Wait..." he said. The doctor looked down at him. "Do you think I could see her before you do the surgery?" He asked. The doctor thought for a moment.

"Okay, but make it quick," he said. Julian thanked him, standing by his side. The doctor lead him down the ICU until they came into Bella's room. Julian walked to her side softly, getting down to his knees. He took her right hand in his. Nearly her entire hand was black. He squeezed her hand, knowing it would be the last time he would feel her fingers coiled in his. He knew Bella would be sad that she wouldn't remember this, so he took out his phone as quickly snapped a picture of their hands. Just moments after, surgeons began rushing in. He quickly kissed her gently before they began wheeling her away to the operating room.

Julian stood quietly, walking back out to the waiting room. His hands felt empty. He was more aware of his prosthetic and felt wobbly as he sat down.

His hands felt cold and empty.

But he waited.

And waited.

And waited.
