*Thursday, March 28*
"Okay, so first off we'll start with something very simple. We're making kimbap, I already have everything we'll need out and everything that needs to be washed is already washed. We just have to cut the vegetables that will be in it and work on the bulgogi(basically thin slices of meat) and season the rice. Put on your apron and we'll get started." I said.
"So what exactly are we doing right now?" Revy asked.
"Cutting vegetables." I tell her. "Then we'll grill the bulgogi and so on."
I take out two cutting boards and two knifes. Putting them on the counter in front of us I ask her, "you do know how to cut vegetables right?"
"I can cut vegetables like Rapmon cuts onions."
"I'll take that as a no. So I'll show you how you should cut it and then I'm going to let you cut half of the vegetables and I'll cut the other half. Okay?"
"Okay, Eomma." She smiled and grabbed the knife, pointing it upwards. I grabbed her hand and forced the knife downwards.
I grabbed a carrot and showed her how to cut it. Handing her half of the vegetables I start cutting up my half.
"Eomma! Am I doing this right?" She asked.
"Cut it a little bit thinner." I tell her. "Just a little thinner."
"Okay... like this?" She showed me the slice.
"Yeah, so just do that to the rest of them." I nod my head approving the cut up carrots.
I finish cutting my half of the carrots and move on to the cucumbers. After the cucumbers are all cut I check to see if the rice is cooled.
"Okay, so the rice is cooled down now." I said and looked back at Revy to see if she is done cutting the the carrots.
She finishes cutting her last carrot and puts it in the bowl.
"I'm done Eomma!" She said proudly, with a smile on her face.
"Here," I hand her the rice, she gives me a confused look. "You can add the sesame oil and salt. Not to much salt, just enough so it doesn't taste bland but not so much that it tastes salty."
"Okay." She replies, looking like a lost puppy.
"I'm going to work on the bulgogi." I tell her and grab it from my refrigerator. I sliced and marinated it yesterday and left it in my refrigerator overnight. So now I just have to grill it.
I pull out my mini grill and getting it all set I start grilling the slices.
"Rice is done, Eomma!" Revy informs me.
"Okay, did you want to take over the grill work?" I ask her.
"You have to tell me and show me how to do that then." She points to the grill.
"Okay so you put the bulgogi on the grill and when it looks grilled you take it off and put it on that plate." I briefly explain and point to the plate.
"I'm going to prepare the eggs." I crack the eggs into a bowl and beat them. Oiling a pan, I pour the eggs into the pan and make a flat omelet. Cutting the omelet into long strips, I put the long strips into a bowl.
"Eomma, I'm done with the bulgogi. What now?" Revy asked.
"Now we roll them." I smile and take out the kim.
"Is that seaweed?" Revy asked.
"Yes, kim also pronounced gim is the Korean word for editable seaweed." I tell her and rip a piece to eat.
"You just eat seaweed like that?" She asked me and gave me a weird face.
"Yeah, try it." I rip off another piece and hand it to her.
"It's an interesting taste." She said but grabbed another piece to eat anywhere.
"One whole kim sheet down." I said and ate the rest of the sheet.
"It's not that bad actually. I could get use to eating kim for a snack or something." She nods her head.
"Well maybe I'll bring you a bag of it the next time we see each other." I shrugged at her.
"I'm holding you to that." She points a finger at me.
"Okay, so before we start eating all the kim... which we probably will.. let's actually use it to make the kimbap." I tell her and snatch the kim in her hands.
"Okay..." she replied.
"So I'll show you how to roll it." I said. "So lay the kim out, shiny side down. Spread the rice about 2/3 onto the kim. And then start putting your fillings on it." I show her and start putting the fillings on it. "Also you have to wrap it very tightly, but not so tightly that it starts coming out of the ends. If you want or need it, I can give you the bamboo roller." I opened a drawer and grabbed it then handed it to her.
"It's a lot easier with this roller thing." Revy said as she rolled them.
"Really? I kinda learned it this way, so I find it easier to do it this way." I shrug.
"Eomma I was wondering, did someone teach you how to cook or did you teach yourself?" Revy asked.
"My halmeoni taught me how to cook one summer when I was like seven, ever since then I was kinda obsessed with learning how to cook. She actually owns a restaurant with my halabeoji." I tell her with a smile.
"Now I'm expecting you to take me to your halmeoni and halabeoji's restaurant." She tells me.
"I'll take you one day and if you're lucky and my halmeoni and halabeoji likes you... well let's just say a lot can happen. You could get a dish or drink named after you, a free meal, a discount for life, free meals for life, and that's just naming some of the things my halmeoni or halabeoji or both will offer if one or both like you." I name off a couple of things.
"I really want to meet your halmeoni and halabeoji now..." she trailed off.
"Maybe on one of the days that we hang out in the future." I tell her.
"I'm holding you to that too." She informs me.
"Okay then, Ai." I smile at her.
"Ai?" She questions.
(Ai means kid/child)
"What? I can't give you a nickname?" I laugh.
"You can..." she shrugs.
"Okay all the rolls are done." I said as we finished them. "Now we decide, do we cut them or eat them full?"
"What about half of them served full and half of them served cut?" She asked.
"Okay, we can do that." I nod my head and start cutting up half of the rolls.
"No, Ai!" I slap her hand away from the rolls.
"Eomma!!!" Revy pouted.
"Just wait until I'm done cutting it. You know how dangerous it is for you to be reaching over a knife being used to cut something?" I don't wait for her to answer. "It's very dangerous!"
I finish cutting half of the kimbap rolls and look over to Revy. "Okay, now you can eat them."
We spent the rest of the day eating kimbap and talking about our jobs and family. I told her about me having two older brothers and an older sister and a younger brother. She told me about her older brother. And so on about things like that.
