CHAPTER 6

THE GREASTEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED

Now, I’m not 100% sure how this happened, but I found myself stuck between Amy and the Doctor in a confessional in 1890 as a Krafayis roomed the church in search for us. I could have waited outside like he ordered me to, but when Amy went in, I felt the urge to prove I wasn’t a coward either.

The Doctor warned up of his excellent hearing and we all held our breaths, but a second later, the confessional was destroyed as we ran out. The invisible monster chased us as we took refuge in another room. We stood in the middle, looking around. We weren’t safe by any means.

I also noticed that Vincent was no longer with us. He must have ran to save his own life and I couldn’t blame him.

The Doctor yelled to the creature and tried to reason with it, to get it to understand that we meant no harm. But it seemed useless. He told him that he knew who it felt, that he too felt lonely…

I looked over at the Doctor and for the first time I noticed it in his eyes. A loneliness beyond compare that even I who has never really known love could imagine. I wanted to… hold him and tell him I was there for some reason. I wanted to let my walls down to him and let him know me and vise versa. I wanted to…

The windows blew out, sending shards of glass everywhere. I was lucky to only receive a cut on the arm that didn’t look too deep. But the Krafayis was now in the room.

And so was Vincent. The ginger man had come back holding his easel as if it was a weapon.

“The creature is making his way around d the edges of the room!” he warned us, being the only one who could see it.

“That’s odd. Why would it walk around the edges of the room… Unless it was blind! This Krafayis was left behind because it was blind!” the Doctor deducted, but he spoke loudly, revealing to the beast where we were.

It… I don’t really know, but Vincent held up his easel and it stabbed the creature that fell to the floor, badly wounded. A terribly cry filled the room. It was suffering, it was dying. The Doctor kneeled next to it and petted it as he tried to console it as it died.

“I didn’t mean to kill it…” Vincent mourned, standing next to it, looking deeply regretful.

“It’s ok…” the Doctor assure him and he walked over to me and Amy. “It’s over now,” he announced.

I thought we would go straight for the TARDIS, but instead, we walked outside into the dark night and we lay on the grass looking up at the sky.

“Look at the sky. It’s not dark and black and without character. The black is, in fact deep blue. And over there: lighter blue and blowing through the blues and blackness the winds swirling through the air and then shining, burning, bursting through: the stars!” the painter explained. “And you see how they roar their light. Everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.”
