CHAPTER 19

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

Moments later, I could hear footsteps in the stairs. River, Amy and the Doctor came out of the underhenge in a panic. They all looked up at the sky at the lights of the many ships flying above.

“What do we do?” Amy shrieked.

“Doctor, listen to me. Everything that even hated you is coming here tonight. You can’t win this. Doctor, this once, just this one time, please, you have to run,” River insisted.

Seems like they already started discussing this underground. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, I agreed with River. The thought of losing the Doctor was much too painful to imagine. He couldn’t take this risk.

“Run where?” he replied.

“Doctor…” I started.

“Fight how?” she snapped back, cutting me off.

He took out a pair of binoculars and looked out into the distance in the direction we came from.

“The greatest military machine in the history of the universe,” he smiled.

“What is? The Daleks?” Amy questioned.

“What are Daleks?” I asked, but was unheard.

“No, no, no! The Romans!” he announced happily.

“Still don’t know what a Dalek is…” I muttered, rolling my eyes.

Between staying outside with alien spaceships getting ready to destroy us and being underground with the Doctor and Amy and some big box, I choose underground.

The Doctor had sent River to get Roman soldiers. A war was getting ready to happen and I didn’t like it one bit.

As Amy and the Doctor discussed, I stayed close to him, our arms brushing. Here, I felt uneasy and troubled, like when we were in Essex and Jared was a few houses away, I knew things would end badly.

Doctor was just admitting to Amy that he took her along because her life didn’t make sense, her house was too big and there were too many empty rooms. The he couldn’t resist wanting to know more, when suddenly, a laser beam of sorts pasted right next to us almost hitting the Doctor.

I instinctively took the Doctor’s hand and he pulled me to hide behind the Pandorica as Amy hid on the other side.

“Ok, what was that?” Amy yelled.

“Need a proper look!” the Doctor shouted back.

“How?”

“You know sometimes I have really brilliant ideas?” he asked her.

“Yes,” she replied, rolling her eyes.

“Sorry!” he shouted and simply ran out of our hiding, waving his arm around like a fool. “Look at me, I’m a target!”

Words could not describe my disbelief. He was just so… ridiculous! He joined Amy behind a pillar.

“What is that?” Amelia asked again.

“Cyber-arm. Arm of a cyberman. And you, AJ, stay exactly where you are!” he warned me.

“What’s a cyberman?”

“Oh, sort of part man, part robot. The organic part must have died years ago, now the robot part is looking for fresh meat,” he explained.

He made up a plan with Amy to grab the arm from behind. As she pretended to be a target, joining me where I was, the Doctor got a hold of the robot part. He took out his sonic screwdriver and sonicked the arm, scrambling its circuit. Suddenly, I felt like something was lurking behind us and before I knew it, some wire of sorts had grabbed my leg. A loud scream escaped my lips as I started to panic wildly. Whatever had a hold of me, also had Amy.

“Doctor!” she yelled.

The arm the Doctor was examining suddenly released a large dose of energy that hit the Doctor, causing him to collapse. He laid unconscious on the ground. I looked as his unanimated body in horror. Without him, I was more terrified than ever.

“Doctor!” Amy and I shouted at the same time.

I looked down to see some sort of metal helmet was making its way towards us and it was also where the wires were coming from. We both started to fight against it, trying to release our legs. Amy picked it up and stared at it for a moment.

“What are you doing?” I asked, trying to get the wire to let me go.

The helmet opened down the middle revealing a skull. We both screamed as loud as we could as the skull fell to the ground and the cyber-head started snapping open and close to get Amy to wear it. Panicking, I took it out of Amy’s hand and banged it hard against the pillar before throwing it as far as I could from us. With its wires as legs, it scurried away.

“Doctor,” I said as I ran over to his body on the ground. I placed my ear next to his mouth and nose and concentrated. A small breeze of air tickled me a bit. “He’s breathing, he’s still alive,” I announced and Amy seemed relieved.

That was until a small dart from the cyber-head hit her in the neck. Heavy footsteps started to approach and we looked to see an actually cyberman with a missing arm and head. Not knowing what to do, tears started to form in my eyes and quickly stream down my face. This was it, this was the end for me.

I laid my head down the Doctor’s chest and clutched his jacket in my first. I sniffed and raised my head, looking at the Doctor’s peaceful face. And something came over me. I placed a hand on his cheek, caressing it gently. Then slowly pressed my lips against his.
