CHAPTER 10

THE STUPID DECISION

Two days later, the contraption almost took the whole bedroom. Once Craig was asleep, I had to sneak to the living room to sleep on the couch. The Doctor didn’t seem to sleep at all. The night before, his… whatever it was that he built scanned the room upstairs. Don’t ask me how it did that either. But it came back perfectly normal which frustrated him.

I woke up in the morning to the Doctor gently shaking me. He had made breakfast and it was sitting on a tray he set down on the coffee table. Eggs with toast and a glass of orange juice.

“Thank you,” I smiled, sleepily, sitting up and placing the tray on my knees to eat.

“Sleep well? Sorry about the mess in our room.”

“It’s fine,” I assured him. “So… What’s today’s plan?”

“Well, that deepens. I might spend it investigating on the room upstairs or Craig will drag me into something else. And I’ll drag you. Sounds good?” he laughed.

I had actually had an idea last night. I didn’t want to tell him though, he’d tell me not to for sure. But the curiosity was killing me.

“Well, Doctor… I kind of wanted to walk about town. On my own that is,” I lied. “I’ll be cautious not to be recognized, I swear,” I quickly added as I saw he was about to protest. “I just want to see some old spots. You know, my old school, my old house. I’ll be careful. I promise.”

“Promise me this. That you will not by any means go near Jared’s home. If the police find you, that is a repairable mistake, but if Jared does, who knows what he could do before I have the time to find you, AJ. Promise me that you won’t,” he looked down at me, quite serious.

“I promise.”

Going to Jared’s house was exactly what I wanted to do. I was probably being stupid not listening to the Doctor, certainly after I promised, but I needed to know how he was a year after her got rid of me. Despite what he did, I can't deny that at one point in my life, I loved this man.

After the Doctor left with Craig – to the call center where our lodger lives – I left the flat locking the door. I had been through Craig’s stuff and took a large hoodie jacket that was ten times too big and slipped it on, putting the hood up. It was more of a dress, but I was easy to hide my face with.

I walked down the street keeping my head down and my hands in my pockets. I limped a bit because of my ankle, but my crushes would have just been in the way. I couldn't believe what I was doing. It was insane!

My heart started pounding loudly in my chest when his house came into view. It was still blue and miserable looking with the paint fading and the roof missing tiles. The front yards lawn was long and covered in weeds as if someone had neglected to cut it for a long time. It was obvious no one but him could be living there, it was exactly the same as I remembered it.

I wasn't going to knock at the door. That would just be silly. Instead, I made my way to the side of the house and looked up in the window. The living room was dark and morbid looking with the TV still on, beer cans on the floor and heroin needles on the coffee table. The window was slightly open and I tried to listen if I could hear any sounds, but all I could here was the TV playing. I pulled the window open wider until I could fit myself through.

I climbed into his house and stood in his living room. It felt so weird being here. Being where it happened. Where I barged in, telling him I was sick of him. Where, mad, he got up to shook me violently. Where he hit me and I smashed into the wall, knocking me unconscious. Here, the last place I remember being before opening my eyes to Leonardo. A chill went down my spine as I replayed the scene in my mind. I slowly walked over to the stair case. I went up and saw that he wasn’t in his bedroom either. Everything was so quiet.

Until I knocked over some books walking into the room.

There was some noise coming from down stairs. I feel my heart completely stop as steps appeared in the stair case. There was nowhere to hide and he was coming. I stood there, paralyzed in fear.

The steps come closer and finally, he walked into the room. Jared’s dark eyes widened in surprise. I hid my face with my hood.

“Who are you? What are you doing in my house?” he yelled angrily.

Panicking, I passed him, pushing him aside to get out of there. But he was faster.  He grabbed my arm tightly, causing me to scream. He pushed me to the ground and brutally took my hood off, pulling my hair at the same time. He locked down at me in disbelief, as if I was a ghost.

Tears started to form in my eyes. He was blocking the way out and the only other exit was the window, but we were on the second floor and my ankle prevented me from running. Why did I have to be so stupid as to come here? Why didn’t I listen to the Doctor?

His initial shock was over, Jared pulled me up and threw me onto the bed.

“How did you escape?” he shouted.

I remained quiet.

“Answer me!” he ordered, slapping me across the face.

“I won’t say anything to you, you disgusting foul cockroach!” I spat back, my anger getting the best of me.

He slapped me again harder and my tears overflowed. He took a chair and pushed me on to it. He leaded over me, just inches away from my face.

“You’re going back, sweetheart. And I’m going to make double the money I got last time,” he grinned slyly.
