CHAPTER 9

JUST A NORMAL DAY

As the Doctor cooked an omelet, her asked questions about the girl on the picture on Craig’s fridge. I wasn’t really listening to the conversation, sitting on the coach, until then. I always liked to know about people’s love lives. Guess it was a girly part of me.

“A girl who is a friend. There’s nothing more,” Craig stated, but I could tell by the way he looked at the picture that he was lying big time.

“Ah, that’s completely normal. Works for me,” the Doctor commented.

“We met at work about a year ago at the call center… And you, how did you two meet?” he said, bringing me into the conversation.

“Oh, hum, why don’t you tell him, sweetie?” he suggested and right then I wanted to kill him for putting me on the spot. I was a terrible liar.

“Hum, I was a waitress in this restaurant… One day he walked in and, you know, sparks flew…” I lied, forcing a smile.

“That’s nice. How long have you been together?” our lodger asked.

“Two years in a week, right, love?” the Doctor said with such ease.

“Right,” I replied.

“So… I’ve just realize that you guys don’t have any stuff with you,” Craig pointed out, changing the topic.

“Oh, it’ll materialize if all goes to plan.”

And by that, even I didn’t completely understood what he was talking about.

I woke up to the sound of the shower running and... singing? Sounded like the Doctor. It was already bright out the window to my new parlor.

I sat up and wrapped my arms around my knees. I didn’t feel at ease here one bit. Sure the flat seemed nice and all, but knowing the possibility that Jared could be in his own home around the block made it hard to really relax. It took hours for me to fall asleep, sharing the one person bed, cuddling up against to Doctor to avoid falling to the floor – which I didn’t hate. In his arms, I did feel a little safer.

But still, I wondered about Jared all night long. Maybe he regretted what he did. Maybe he was already dead of an over dose.

Last night, he had a conversation with Amy over the ear piece. The TARDIS was stuck in materializing loop, it wouldn’t land. There was a scream from the flat up stairs too that had me worried. The Doctor left for a while to investigate and came back later with nothing to say.

Noises from the hall pulled me out of the thoughts.

When I saw that it was just Craig asked about the shower, I zoned out again. But then I heard a bang coming from the bathroom.

I jumped out of bed and opened the door to see the Doctor running in the hall, holding a towel on his private parts on his way to the door, a toothbrush in his other hand. He had a cute butt…

I followed him to the main hall where he pointed the toothbrush up the stairs. Then I realized he must have mistaken it for the sonic screwdriver.

“What happened? What’s going on?” he asked, lost.

Craig was coming down the stairs.

“Is that my toothbrush?” he asked, taking it out of the Doctor’s hand.

In a hurry for details, the Doctor started to question Craig about the man upstairs that he had just went up to see what had happened. He cautiously went up the stairs and I watched.

The flat door opened and a young woman with blond hair walked in. She was the girl from the photo on the fridge.

She looked up the stairs and saw that Doctor naked, towel wrapped around his waist.

“Oh, hello?”

“Ah! Hello!” the Doctor smiled, coming down the stairs.

He awkwardly kissed her on both cheeks. Laughing to myself, I walked back into the flat.

I replayed that football game in my mind. The team Craig played on was missing a player and he turned to the Doctor as a replacement. He did brilliantly! He dominated the other team, there was no stopping him. Though he could have passed the ball a little.

And thankfully, no one recognized me. I looked older and much thinner than the me on the posters which helped, but at the same time, were people really that thick?

But that was in the afternoon and now it was the evening and I sat on the corner of the bed.

I watched as the Doctor put pieces of whatever together. He was building something, impossible to know what it was. He just finished a conversation with Amy over the ear piece and looked a little tense.

I was fascinated in what he was doing, he spoke to himself, sounding so… intelligent. He seemed so passionate and concentrated, he seemed to have forgotten I was sitting in the corner of the room.

Until finally, he turned to me.

“You know, I can see you don’t like being here… Jared, right? I swear if I get my hands on him…” a spark of anger appeared in his eyes and I breathed deeply at the mention of that man’s name. “I’m not violent. But we could go to the authorities…”

“As much as I like your concern for the law-“

“My concern for you, I could care less about the law, AJ,” he cut me off.

I didn’t know what to say. I was… happy. I smiled gratefully at him and walked up next to him.

“Thank you,” and I surprised myself by hugging him myself.

He hugged me back and I knew he was smiling.

Someone knocked on the door and the Doctor pulled away to answer Craig.

“Hey, man. Listen, Sophie’s coming round tonight and I was wondering if you could give us some space?” he asked through the crack in the door.

“Oh, don’t mind me and AJ. You won’t even know we’re here!” he assured him.

Another loud bang from upstairs. They were quite frequent now.

“That’s an idea…” the Doctor muttered to himself. He closed the door to Craig and got back to work as I shrunk back into my corner. “Yes, perfect! What a beauty!” he said, putting an orange street cone into the mix.
