“Hey, Delirious, did you hear about the new kid?”

Jonathan looks up from the homework he had been trying to do, and sees none other than Evan sit next to him. He thinks it over and shakes his head. “Nah, I didn't hear nothing about a new kid.”

Evan suddenly leans in close to Jon's face, sending his heart into overdrive as he realizes that they're maybe three inches apart. He's about to ask Evan what the fuck he's doing when Evan grabs both sides of his face and speaks in a low, hushed whisper. “I heard he got expelled from his old school, and that he's super strong. And you know what else?”

“What?”

Evan looks around, as if anyone else would be able to hear them, then grins. “I've also heard that he's getting pretty close to Bryce in the, like, two days he's been here.”

Jonathan is both relieved and confused as Evan lets go of him, scooting back just enough to give Jonathan room to breathe. Though he's a bit upset about Evan moving away (he may or may not have thought he was getting some surprise kiss), he's also a bit confused about the information he's recieved.

“Bryce? You- you mean Bryce made friends for once?” Jonathan's eyes widen as Evan nods, and then he smiles at the idea of Bryce coming out of his shell for once. “You- you know what? I'm glad he's making a friend.”

Evan nods. “Yeah. But he looks like some kind of gangster, honestly. I'm surprised Bryce isn't afraid of him like other people are.”

“You fuckin’ scared the shit out of me the first time we met but I'm still friends with you. What the fuck kinda point is that?” Jonathan huffs and crosses his arms, giving Evan a demanding look.

“Because you're crazy and I like that about you, Delirious,” Evan says happily.

Jonathan blushes lightly at the compliment, and decides it's best to throw one back at him. “Well thank you mister Owl Man! I like… I like your… your face?”  He makes a face as he realizes what he said.

Evan simply laughs and smirks at Jonathan. “You like my face? Are you saying you think I'm hot?”

“W-what? No, no! Well, um, I just- um…..” Jonathan falls silent for a moment, trying his best to think of a way to come back from this. Without thinking, he just stands up and screams a loud “FUCK YOU I'M TRYING TO COMPLIMENT YOU!”

Evan nods, a pretty smile on his face as he stands up, grabs Jonathan's hand, and pulls him off towards the cafeteria. “I know, I know. I'm just teasing you, Delly. Come on, let's go get lunch before classes start again.”

“Hey! Bryce! Bring your friend over here!” Tyler, from besides Jonathan, calls out to Bryce who is walking across the courtyard with another person by his side.

Bryce visibly jumps at the sound of Tyler's insanely loud voice, then turns to the rest of them with a smile. He says something to the guy, then pulls him over.

“Hey,” Bryce says softly, a bright smile planted onto his face. “I brought the friend.”

Everyone moves over to make room for them, and the two squeeze into the already crowded table. It's Marcel who leans forwards a little and smirks at Bryce. “Who's this Bryce, huh?”

“I'm Ryan,” the guy says with a small chuckle. Jonathan would be lying if he said that Ryan didn't have a nice voice.

“Ooh, cool name. What's your power, huh?” Craig looks a lot more interested in the glowing necklace Ryan has around his neck.

Ryan shrugs. “I do black magic. Necromancy. You know, with the dead people and spirits and all that fun stuff.”

Everyone immediately begins to talk about Ryan's power and how cool it is. Jonathan, through his excitement, takes note of how quiet Bryce is in all of this. Maybe Bryce was still a bit awkward in groups like these. He couldn't blame the guy, though. Anyone would feel scared if they sat next to an excited Tyler.

This went on until lunch was over, and then everyone dispersed. Bryce and Jonathan were currently walking along to choir together, chatting quietly.  Or, rather, Jonathan had asked Bryce how his day was going and Bryce was more than happy to share.

“...and then I asked Ryan if he knew anything about his powers. Ryan said he's not very good at using his powers. He's good at math though, so he helped me with my homework. And he also gave me a bag of chips before lunch because I was hungry.” Bryce smiles shyly as he walks, holding a book close to him.

Jonathan laughs softly, holding the door to the choir room open for Bryce. “You guys have gotten pretty close, yeah?” His smile grows as he sees Bryce blush and he smirks playfully. “Aw, does little Bryce have a crush?”

“N- no! I do not! I just, you know…” Bryce falls silent for a moment, before stomping his foot childishly and crossing his arms. “Why am I always little to you? I am not little!”

Jonathan decides to not mention how Bryce changed the subject and instead takes Bryce's bag and sets it on his desk for him. “Because, dude. You're so tiny and cute! And when I say tiny I mean you act tiny. And you're younger than me. Ooh,” he laughs. “You could be my baby brother, Bryce! I'm your big brother now.”

“My big brother? You're my brother?” Bryce raises an eyebrow.

Jonathan nods. “Yup. You're my baby brother now. I'll beat up all your bullies and keep you safe at night.”

Bryce giggles softly and smiles at Jonathan. To his surprise, Bryce suddenly jumps up and hugs him tightly.

“Thanks, Jonny. I appreciate that.”

Choir was fun. The teacher was sweet and playful all the time, and today they hadn't quite had anything planned so they had just sat around singing whatever they pleased.

It was currently ten minutes until class ended. Jonathan was sitting besides Bryce, reading over his shoulder. Bryce didn't seem to mind him, though he had been a bit embarrassed about Jon seeing the book he was reading.

“It's cool. I like books too,” he had said, and then the topic had been completely dismissed.

Jonathan would be lying if he had said he wasn't as interested in the book as Bryce was. The book Bryce has is about a boy who meets a monster, and they both team up to free the monster from some spell and get rid of an evil king.

Cheesy plot, but very very interesting.

So interesting, in fact, that they both missed the bell ringing. The big clock tower chimes loudly once, twice, three times. Bryce and Jon both look towards the source of the noise, as does a few other students.

“Miss Kiwo? Shouldn't we have left class a while ago?” Someone speaks up, looking over at their teacher.

Miss Kiwo simply frowns, gesturing to her computer. “I told you guys. I received instructions to not let you guys out of class until told.”

Jonathan frowns, and he and Bryce glance nervously at each other. “What happened?”

They only get a shrug and an equally confused “I wasn't told any more than you guys” in response.

The next ten minutes went by painfully slow. Jonathan couldn't focus on the book anymore, and neither could Bryce from the looks of it.

Another five minutes passed and they still didn't have any answer. Bryce had given up on the book, and was letting Jonathan doodle on his cheek (because as cute as Bryce's sweater was today, it refused to keep the sleeves rolled up). Jonathan was beginning to give up hope. He wanted freedom. All the students did.

And thankfully, none of them had to wait any longer. A loud, sudden boom echoes through the school, startling everyone.

Rushing outside, Jonathan and Bryce join a small crowd of students gawking up at some kind of magic up in the sky and the smoke that slowly puffed up after it.

“I think that's our cue,” Miss Kiwo murmurs. “You come on… I'll walk you all back to your dorms. I don't know how dangerous that is over there. Come on now, classes are probably cancelled.”

Jonathan nods silently, glancing around at the horde of students outside. His eyes meet Ryan's for a split second from what feels to be a mile away. They nod at each other, then Jonathan turns around and runs to catch up with the others.
